Food Spoilage

Food Spoilage (formerly the standalone SpoiledZ mod) makes food items spoil over time, tracked against the current in-game season from Fabric Seasons or Serene Seasons (either one works — see Requirements).

How spoilage works

  • Food items tracked for spoilage accumulate a spoilage percentage over time based on how many seasons have passed since they were obtained (configurable, 4 seasons to fully spoil by default).
  • Spoilage is tracked on items sitting in your inventory, in containers, dropped on the ground, cooking in a furnace/campfire, and in crafting-result slots — so you can't dodge spoilage by stashing food away.
  • Fully spoiled food shows a distinct "spoiled" item model variant (added as overrides to vanilla food item models) and can trigger a negative status effect if eaten.
  • Cake also has spoiled slice variants that change appearance as it ages.
  • Spoiled food can still be fed to composters or thrown away; some animals may still eat it depending on compatibility mods installed.
  • Crafting with fresh ingredients can optionally reset an item's spoilage timer back to zero (off by default — see freshCrafting in Configuration).

Which items spoil

A built-in item tag (spoiledz:spoiling_items) lists which items spoil by default (wheat, egg, milk bucket, honey bottle, cake, and more); another tag (spoiledz:non_spoiling_items) explicitly excludes items from spoilage. Both can be extended or overridden with a datapack — see Datapack Creation.

Requirements

Food Spoilage requires either Fabric Seasons or Serene Seasons (plus Serene Seasons' required GlitchCore library) to be installed separately — one of them drives the season/calendar clock spoilage timing is based on. Fabric Seasons is preferred if both are installed. If neither is installed, spoilage timing is simply disabled rather than crashing. Capsaicin (the food-event library Food Spoilage's hooks are built on) is bundled directly in the jar, so no separate download is needed for it. Farmer's Delight, Expanded Delight, and Vinery are optional — if installed, their food/drink items and block entities (cutting boards, cooking pots, skillets, stoves, juicers, apple presses, wood-fired ovens) are tracked for spoilage too. See Compatibility for the full list.

See Configuration for the config screen options.
