Production Tools
Fount includes professional tools for numbering scenes, locking your script for production, and managing title pages.
In Fountain, scene numbers are added with #tag# at the end of a scene heading:
INT. THE VAULT - NIGHT #15#
These numbers appear in the left margin of the editor (when show_scene_numbers is enabled) and in the Scene Tree.
/renum
Automatically numbers every scene heading in your script sequentially starting from 1. Existing scene numbers are replaced.
/clearnum
Strips all #number# tags from every scene heading, leaving the headings clean.
/injectnum
/injectnum 14B
- Without an argument: auto-computes and injects the next logical number for the current scene.
- With an argument: assigns the exact tag you specify (e.g.,
14B,22A).
When a screenplay enters production, scene numbers become sacred — they're referenced by every department. Adding or removing scenes can't change existing numbers.
/locknum
When production lock is active:
- Existing scene numbers are frozen — they never change during renumbering
-
New scenes inserted between existing ones receive suffixed numbers (e.g., between scene 14 and 15, a new scene becomes
14A) - Running
/renumwith production lock on generates these sub-scene numbers automatically
/unlocknum
Returns to normal numbering behavior where /renum can reassign all numbers freely.
/addtitle
Inserts a standard Fountain title page block at the very top of your script:
Title: Untitled
Credit: Written by
Author:
Draft date:
Contact:
Your cursor is placed at the end of Title: Untitled so you can immediately start editing.
If a title page already exists (detected by metadata lines like Title: at the top), Fount will warn you instead of creating a duplicate.
You can configure Fount to insert a title page template automatically whenever you create a new file. Set this in your config:
set auto_title_page
Fount allows you to track production assets (Props, Cast, VFX, etc.) directly within your Fountain script using Structured Metadata.
Wrap a key: value pair in double brackets:
[[props: Flashlight, Map]]
[[vfx: Glowing Eyes]]
These tags are indexed by the X-Ray Breakdown Tab (/xray, then tab 4), allowing you to audit your script's production requirements scene by scene. See Fountain-Markup#Production-Tags-&-Metadata for the full list of supported keys.
You can explicitly color scene headings in the Scene Tree (Ctrl+T) and Index Cards (Ctrl+I) using the sceneclr tag:
INT. THE BAR - NIGHT
[[sceneclr: red]]
Supported colors include standard names (red, blue, green, yellow, magenta, cyan, white) and hex codes (e.g., #ff5500).
Revision Mode allows you to track changes in your script after it has been finalized or locked for production.
-
/revision on: Start tracking changes. Every line you edit from this point forward will be marked with a*in the right margin of the editor. -
/revision off: Stop tracking new changes. Existing marks stay visible. -
/revision bake: "Approved" or "Lock" the current draft. This removes all*marks from the script and turns off revision mode.
Revision markers are saved directly into your .fountain file as a hidden metadata block at the end of the file. This ensures that your markers are preserved when you close and reopen the file, while remaining invisible to other Fountain editors.
When you export your script to PDF, all revision marks are printed in the right margin, following standard industry practices for production revisions.
Structure templates provide predefined story beats to help outline your screenplay.
/structure
Opens the Structure Picker modal.
- Use
Up/Downto navigate templates. -
Enter: Imports the selected structure's beats into the current buffer at your cursor position (or creates a new buffer if used from the Home screen). -
Shift + Enter: Opens the selected structure in a new buffer, keeping your current script untouched.
Next: Export and Reports — Getting your screenplay out of the terminal.
