Snapshots
Fount automatically saves snapshots of your work, so you never lose progress. Think of snapshots as lightweight, automatic version control for your screenplay.
Snapshots are created automatically:
-
On every manual save (
/worCtrl+Z→/w) - Periodically when auto-save triggers (every 30 seconds if enabled)
Each snapshot is a full copy of your script saved to a dedicated directory with a timestamp in the filename:
my_script15_04_2026_14_30.fountain
/snap
This opens the Snapshots Gallery — a table showing all snapshots for the current file:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| File Name | The base name of the script |
| Date | When the snapshot was created |
| Time | The exact time (HH:MM:SS) |
Snapshots are listed newest-first.
| Shortcut | Action |

Replace the current buffer with the selected snapshot's content |
o |
Open in new buffer — loads the snapshot as a separate file (safe comparison) |
Esc |
Close the gallery without restoring |
Tip: Use
oto open a snapshot side-by-side in a new buffer. You can then switch between the current and snapshot buffers withCtrl+PageUp/Downto compare differences.
Snapshots are automatically pruned to keep your disk usage manageable:
- Maximum 50 snapshots per file
- Maximum 30 days of history
Older snapshots beyond these limits are deleted automatically when a new one is created.
Snapshots are stored in your local data directory:
-
Linux:
~/.local/share/Fount/snapshots/ -
macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Fount/snapshots/ -
Windows:
%APPDATA%\Fount\data\snapshots\
If Fount crashes unexpectedly (e.g., a panic), it attempts an emergency save of all unsaved, dirty buffers. These are saved as .save files alongside the original:
my_script.fountain.save
If the .save file already exists, it creates numbered variants: .save.1, .save.2, etc.
Next: Production Tools — Scene numbering and production lock.
