Channels

The Channels page shows the channel tree of the selected virtual server, with the clients sitting in each channel, and is where channels are created, copied, edited, moved and deleted. Everyone with access to the server can look at it; changing anything needs the admin role — see Users and Roles.

The tree

  • Each channel shows its ID (#12) next to its name, nested the way TeamSpeak has them. The header counts the channels and the clients online.
  • The clients in a channel are listed under it. Query connections (this app's own among them) carry a Query badge, and away and muted clients are marked.
  • Drag a channel onto another one to move it below that one. (Admins only.)
  • For admins, three small buttons appear when you point at a row: copy, edit and delete.

Creating and copying

  • Create Channel takes one name per line and makes a permanent channel for each, at the top level of the tree. Several lines create several channels at once; if some fail, the message says how many (for example "2/3 created, 1 failed"). Everything beyond the name is set afterwards by editing the channel.
  • Use as template (the copy button on a row) makes a new channel under the same parent, with the name you give it and the original's topic, description, codec and codec quality, client limits, channel type and needed talk power. The password, the icon and any permissions set on the channel are not copied.

Editing one channel

The pencil on a row opens a dialog with four tabs. It loads the channel's settings fresh from the server every time it opens, so what you see is what the server has.

Tab What's in it
General Name, icon, topic, description and password (leave the password empty to keep the current one)
Voice Codec (Opus Voice or Opus Music), quality from 0 to 10, and whether voice data in the channel is encrypted
Limits & Type Permanent, semi-permanent or temporary (with the delay before an empty temporary channel is deleted), the default channel switch, max clients, max family clients and the talk power needed to speak
Advanced Sort position, phonetic name (how text-to-speech should say the name), banner image URL and how the banner is fitted

Two settings that are easy to misread:

  • A server has exactly one default channel. Switching it on here takes the flag away from whichever channel had it.
  • Max family clients counts the channel and all its sub-channels together. Inherited takes the limit from the parent.

Editing several channels at once

Tick the boxes in front of the channels and press Edit Selected. You choose which of codec, codec quality, needed talk power and permanent to apply — only the ticked fields are written, everything else on each channel stays as it is. If some channels refuse, the message says how many were updated.

Channel icons

A channel can show an icon from the virtual server's icon pool.

  • In the General tab, Choose icon... opens a picker with the icons already in the pool, and the × next to the icon removes it. The picker only chooses: to add an icon, upload it on the Icons page first.
  • Choosing needs the SSH credentials of the server connection. TeamSpeak's WebQuery has no file-transfer commands, so the picker and the Icons page read the pool over SSH ServerQuery. Without them the picker says so — see Getting Started.
  • The icon is a channel permission. On TeamSpeak 6 a channel's icon is the channel permission i_icon_id; Save sets or removes that permission. So it also shows up on the Channel layer on the Permissions page, and changing it there changes the same thing. Sub-channels do not inherit it.
  • The other settings are saved first, then the icon, and only if you changed it. If the icon is refused, the dialog stays open, the message says that the other settings were saved, and the icon stays selected so you can try again.

If you manage channels over the query interface yourself, see Tips and Pitfalls: channeledit does not accept channel_icon_id.

When the icon is refused

Changing a permission is checked against your account's permission modify power, and the message tells you which check failed:

  • "This channel requires more channel permission modify power than your account has" (TeamSpeak's error 2568, naming i_channel_needed_permission_modify_power). Every channel carries the power needed to change its permissions, and a channel made by the query admin asks for the query admin's — 100 on a default server, and that includes channels created in this app as long as it connects as the query admin. A regular Server Admin (75 by default) cannot change such a channel's icon until the value on the channel is lowered, or the change is made with a stronger account.
  • "Your permission modify power is too low to change icons" (error 2570). Your account's permission modify power is below what the server requires for i_icon_id (the i_needed_modify_power_icon_id permission).

Assigning an icon does not need b_icon_manage. Checked on TeamSpeak 6.0.0-beta13.1.

Deleting

The delete button asks for confirmation, and there is no undo.
