Getting Started
Put the jar in your mods folder on Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1. Nothing else is needed. Optional mods are listed on Compatibility.
Once the mod is installed, a new world uses FT's Geology (Tall) by default:
- 960 blocks tall, from y -64 to 896;
- one block is 10 m across and 10 m high, so the land is wider as well as taller;
- the highest peaks reach about y 800.

Under World Type you can also pick FT's Geology, the same model at normal height (y -64 to 320, 25 m to a block). Everest, K2 and the Matterhorn only appear in the tall world.
With Terralith the mod's world stays the default and Terralith's biomes grow on its terrain.
With Tectonic, TerraBlender, Biomes O' Plenty or BYG the vanilla world stays the default. Pick the mod's world under World Type if you want it.
The terrain (mountains, rivers, coasts) needs a new world. In a world made before, or with another world type:
- earthquakes, volcanoes, hot springs, weather, gases and instruments all work;
- rock layers, springs and other features are worked into chunks as they load, without touching anything a player built.
A world made with an older version of the mod keeps the terrain it was made with, so new chunks never leave a seam. You get a one-time message about this when you join.
| item | recipe |
|---|---|
| Geologist's Hammer | 2 iron ingots, 2 sticks |
| Fault Compass | 4 copper ingots around an amethyst shard |
| Geological Field Guide | book + copper ingot |
Every other recipe shows in the recipe book once you hold one of its ingredients.
Good first steps:
- Read the field guide. It is 52 pages long, and the first chapters explain what you see around you.
- Use the fault compass to find out which plate you are on and how far the nearest boundary is.
- Right-click rock with the hammer to see what it is and what lies under it.
- All
/geologycommands need operator level 2. Players get their information from instruments. - Settings live in each world's
serverconfig/fts_geology.tomlon Forge (put a copy indefaultconfigs/to use it for every new world), and inconfig/fts_geology.tomlon NeoForge. See Commands and Config. - Two features are off by default and worth knowing about:
-
soilWaterChangesGround: droughts kill grass back and soil soaks up poured water (see Water and Soil); -
emergentEnabled: player-built geysers (see Hot Springs and Geysers).
-
