A short guide for filming the mod: a seed with good spots close together, and how to set off eruptions, quakes and storms on cue. Everything here was checked with 0.11.3.

Setting up

  • Make a new world in Creative with cheats on. Every mod command needs operator rights.
  • World Type: FT's Geology (Tall). It is the default unless Tectonic, TerraBlender, Biomes O' Plenty or BYG is installed; then pick it under World Type.
  • Seed: 7043559275810839504 (the seed of the 0.11 trailer). Most places below are the same with or without Terralith; four differ, and the table gives both.
  • Distant Horizons is worth having for the mountain shots.
  • Handy before filming:
    • /gamerule doDaylightCycle false and /gamerule doWeatherCycle false to hold the light and the sky;
    • /gamerule sendCommandFeedback false to keep command replies out of chat;
    • F1 to hide the interface.

Places in the trailer seed

Spawn is near 1000, -1752. /geology find <place> tp takes you to the nearest one; the search can take up to a minute. Heights can differ by a few blocks between the two setups.

A volcanic eruption

A placed volcano normally sleeps 10 to 30 minutes first. For filming, shorten that:

  1. With the world closed, open <world>/serverconfig/fts_geology.toml (on NeoForge config/fts_geology.toml) and set:
    volcanoDormantMinTicks = 600
    volcanoDormantMaxTicks = 1200
    volcanoUnrestTicks = 600

    Put them back afterwards: 12000, 36000 and 3600.
  2. Go to flat, dry ground (not a lake or a rift floor) and wait 30 to 60 seconds for the chunks to load.
  3. /geology place strato medium. It builds in a few seconds.
  4. Then, in order:
    • within about a minute, unrest: a swarm of small quakes, and a nearby seismograph shows the swarm and sounds its siren;
    • 30 seconds of rumbling and black smoke;
    • 60 seconds of eruption: lava fountains, bombs and ash, with one pyroclastic flow running down from the lowest notch of the crater.

Night shots work best. The active volcanoes in the table erupt on their own schedule; the settings above only shorten their next sleep. Extinct ones never erupt.

A fissure eruption

  1. Stand on a dry shoulder of a rift, not on its flooded floor (under water there is steam instead of a lava curtain).
  2. /geology fissure here 200, then /geology fissure tp for a good viewpoint.
  3. In order: about 10 seconds of unrest; 2 minutes of the ground opening (the floor drops, cracks open, a few hundred small quakes); a 5-minute pause you can skip with /geology fissure next; 3 minutes of lava curtain; then the lava gathers into a few vents and builds small cinder cones.

An earthquake

  1. /geology find collision tp, and build something near the fault: a cobblestone house shows the damage well.
  2. /geology quake collision 7 where you stand.
  3. About 80 blocks from the fault: the P wave warning after about 8 seconds, the S wave at about 11 seconds, strong shaking for about 14 seconds. The ground has moved by 17 seconds and landslides come around 25 seconds. Start the camera 6 to 7 seconds after the command.

Damage depends on what a building is made of and what it stands on (see Earthquakes). quakesBreakBuilds = false keeps the shaking but spares builds.

Geysers, hot springs and gas

  • /geology place geyser builds a geyser that erupts at once, for about 2 minutes.
  • /geology place hotspring builds a hot spring with its coloured mats.
  • A standing gas flame: /geology find oil tp, /geology gas tap to open the gas cap, then light the mouth with flint and steel. It looks best at night.

Weather

  • /geology storms spawn 1 400 sets a storm right where you stand.
  • For a storm seen from far away, set it about 800 blocks off and film it with Distant Horizons on.
  • /weather clear clears the sky again.
