Power
A Geothermal Turbine makes FE from the heat underground, but only if it sits on a real well:
- Drill straight down and line the hole with Well Casing (6 iron ingots make 8). The casing can go down up to 96 blocks.
- The well has to end in one of the mod's hot water reservoirs: a hot spring's bed, the deep chamber a spring or geyser rises from, a steam vent or a mud pot. Lava poured down a hole does not count.
- Put the turbine on top.
A short well into a pool's bed gives part of the power. A well that reaches a chamber over a bed of magma, 30 to 60 blocks down, gives full power: 80 to 480 FE a tick. Ground far from plate boundaries and hot spots gives less. Turbines within 8 blocks of each other share one reservoir. FE comes out of the sides and the top.
Set straight on an active geyser's vent, a turbine caps it: the geyser stops erupting and its steam drives the turbine at full power, with no casing needed. Take the turbine off and the geyser erupts again.
The rotor spins with the output and slows when it stops. Right-click to see what it makes and why. Use the geothermal probe first to find out whether a well here would reach anything.
Power with no moving parts. Put its copper plate against something hot (lava, magma, fire, a campfire, a lit gas burner, a standing gas flame or a steam vent) and its fins against water or ice. It turns a few percent of the heat into up to 300 FE a tick, given out of its other four faces.
The Gas Engine burns methane or hydrogen (biogas works too) at 35% efficiency. It breathes through its front, so methane-laden mine air runs it directly, and exhaust leaves through the top, into a pipe or the world. It warns you when burning badly makes carbon monoxide, and lists why it stopped.
With Create installed, a Crankshaft on the engine's flywheel axle turns Create shafts at 64 rpm. At full load it gives about 4,000 SU on methane and 4,700 on hydrogen, and it only takes as much work as the network asks, burning almost no gas when idle. The rate matches Create Crafts & Additions (480 FE a tick = 16,384 SU). Engineer's goggles show the engine's work.
- A lit gas burner facing up under a Create boiler heats it like a blaze burner.
- A Create water wheel turns in a dam's spillway (see Water and Soil).
With Electrodynamics, the turbine, gas engine and thermoelectric generator put 120 V on Voltaic wires. The well pump, electrolyser, compressor, separator and fan take 120 V, and refuse higher voltages instead of blowing up, telling you so.
