PaperDuet 0.5.6

Choose a tag to compare

@KalenHwei KalenHwei released this 26 Oct 02:58

Italian, and error reports that help fix problems.

Download

Either way, keep 2 to 8 GB free for the translation model, depending on which one you choose (2.1 GB for the recommended one).

Install

If you have PaperDuet 0.2 or later, it offers this update by itself; click it and restart.

Otherwise:

Mac

  1. Open the disk image and drag PaperDuet into Applications, replacing the old version if you have one. Open it from there.
  2. The app is not notarized by Apple, so the first time macOS says it cannot check it. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down to the message about PaperDuet, click Open Anyway and confirm.

Windows

  1. Run the installer.
  2. First time only: if Windows says “Windows protected your PC,” click More info, then Run anyway.

Your translations, notes and settings stay as they are.

What's new

  • Italian: translate papers into Italian, and use PaperDuet in Italian (it follows your system language, or choose it in Settings › Appearance).
  • When something goes wrong, PaperDuet sends the developer an error report: what went wrong, the version and the system, without file paths or paper content. It's on by default; turn it off in Settings › Data.

The other files below (.app.tar.gz and latest.json) are what the in-app updater downloads; you don't need them.

PaperDuet 0.5.5

@KalenHwei KalenHwei released this 26 Oct 01:42

Fixes for journal papers: loosely set lines, the abstract, and layout analysis.

What's new

  • Journal papers set loosely (many Elsevier papers, for example) no longer have lines broken into stray words. Those words used to be translated one by one and drawn over the paragraph, leaving gaps and misplaced text and reference links in the translation.
  • The abstract is translated right after the title, before the introduction, so it no longer stays blank for minutes.
  • When PaperDuet's background reader cannot open a paper on your computer, it now reads the paper the way the reader displays it, instead of stopping at "Layout analysis failed".
  • Dashes in Elsevier papers no longer come through as the letter "e".

The other files below (.app.tar.gz and latest.json) are what the in-app updater downloads; you don't need them.

@KalenHwei KalenHwei released this 24 Oct 14:34

A one-time question about sharing anonymous usage and diagnostic data, off unless you agree.

Windows

  1. Run the installer.
  2. First time only: if Windows says “Windows protected your PC,” click More info, then Run anyway.

Your translations, notes and settings stay as they are.

What's new

  • PaperDuet now asks once, after a paper is open, whether you'd like to share anonymous usage and diagnostic data to help improve it: the version, your system, the interface language, the model and the kinds of errors. Nothing is sent unless you agree, never paper content, file names or personal information, and you can turn it off anytime in Settings › Data.

The other files below (.app.tar.gz and latest.json) are what the in-app updater downloads; you don't need them.

AI Search in the library: find a paper you have read by its title, text, translation, summary or tags.

What's new

  • AI Search 🔍 at the top of the library, above AI Organize. Find a paper you have read by its title, original text, translation, summary or tags. With a translation model ready, words in Chinese also find the English original, and the other way round. Under each paper found, a line shows where it was found.
  • Searching and AI Organize now move the papers found to the top, and the others below in grey, instead of hiding them.

The other files below (.app.tar.gz and latest.json) are what the in-app updater downloads; you don't need them.

PaperDuet 0.5.1

Choose a tag to compare

@KalenHwei KalenHwei released this 24 Oct 11:35

A library of your papers, import of whole folders, AI Organize, and fixes for tables and failed paragraphs.

What's new

  • Library. The folder panel is now a list of every paper you have read or imported. Open a paper to see its translations and open one of them; hover to rename the paper or read its summary; right-click to show the file or remove it from the list.
  • Import next to the panel buttons: several PDFs at once, or a whole folder with its sub-folders. Dropping files or folders on the window works too.
  • AI Organize ✨ at the top of the library tags each paper with its field and topics. Pick tags to see only the papers that have them.
  • Summaries are written in the interface language.
  • Fixed: garbled tables and paragraphs that failed to translate in some papers.

The other files below (.app.tar.gz and latest.json) are what the in-app updater downloads; you don't need them.

PaperDuet 0.5.0

Choose a tag to compare

@KalenHwei KalenHwei released this 24 Oct 05:51

A paper summary behind a light bulb, a button that opens the folder, and PaperDuet for Windows.

What's new

  • Paper summary. Once the whole paper is translated, a light bulb appears next to the progress ring. Click it for a short summary written by the translation model, in the language of the translation: the field and subfield, the question, the method and experiments, what the results show and the conclusion. The summary is kept with the paper; Regenerate asks the model again.
  • A folder button at the top of the folder panel, next to Refresh, opens the folder in Finder (File Explorer on Windows).
  • PaperDuet for Windows. A dedicated graphics card (NVIDIA or AMD) speeds up translation; without one, PaperDuet asks before translating on the CPU.

The other files below (.app.tar.gz and latest.json) are what the in-app updater downloads; you don't need them.

Fewer paragraphs left in English.

Download

PaperDuet_0.3.2_aarch64.dmg (click to download) · Apple silicon Mac (M1 or later) · macOS 13.3 or later · 2 to 8 GB free for the translation model, depending on which one you choose (2.1 GB for the recommended one).

  3. Your translations, notes and settings stay as they are.

What's new

  • Japanese, Korean and Chinese translations that write a large number in 万 ("10万" for 100,000, "4萬" for 40K) no longer fail the number check.
  • When the retries only leave a cross-reference ("section 5.4") or a citation out of a sentence, the translation is kept instead of leaving the whole paragraph in English. A missing figure such as "3.5 days" still counts as a failure.
