Vertex Painting

Sander van Rossen edited this page Nov 3, 2026 · 1 revision

The Chisel Paint tool paints vertex data onto the surfaces of brushes and generators: a color, or a named value. Pick it from the scene view's tools.

Paint profiles

What paint means is up to the shader. A shader's paint profile (in the project's paint settings) lists the modes a surface drawn with it can be painted in, and the vertex attribute each one writes to. Chisel only writes the paint; the shader shows it.

  • Mode: what is painted. A surface takes the mode when the paint profile of its material's shader has a mode of that name.
  • When a surface can't take the mode, the tool says why next to the mouse: the surface has no shader, the shader has no paint profile, or its profile has no mode of that name.

Painting

  • Click and drag on a surface to paint it. Only the surface that is hit is painted. A stroke is one undo.
  • Control-click takes the paint under the mouse as the brush's color or value.
  • Swatches keep colors: the add button adds the current color, and a middle-click or right-click on a swatch removes it.

Operations

  • Paint: towards the color or value.
  • Fill: the whole surface clicked on, to the color or value.
  • Add / Subtract: raises or lowers a value.
  • Smooth: towards the neighbouring paint.
  • Erase: back to the mode's default.

Brush

  • Radius: the brush's radius, in metres.
  • Strength: how much a dab moves the paint towards what it paints.
  • Hardness: how much of the radius is painted at full strength. Beyond it the brush falls off smoothly.

Paint spacing

A surface is painted at the points of a grid, and is cut at them. Paint Spacing (with the surface's details, shown for a shader that takes paint) sets how far apart they are, in metres (0.25 by default). Changing it resamples the paint the surface has. A surface has at most 4096 points; on a larger surface the cells grow until it fits. When a brush grows, its paint grid grows with it and keeps the paint it had.
