Checks and Messages

Check 4DS Scene, at the top of the 4DS Model sidebar tab, runs every check the export runs and writes nothing. Press it before a long export, and after anything you are not sure about.

Errors stop the export and nothing is written. Warnings let it through and say what changed. Most carry a suggested fix.

The refusals

What it says What to do
The scene runs at N frames per second The game plays every animation at 25 — one frame every 40 ms — and an animation carries no rate of its own, so keys written from another clock would land somewhere else in time. Press 25 fps in the 5DS Animation tab; your keys stay on the frames they are on. Refused by the animation export, the movement export, Check 5DS Animation, and a model exported with Write Its Animation — that one before a byte of the model is written.
Sector does not enclose a volume / is not a closed mesh / has outward-facing normals A sector is a room: close the holes it names, and flip the normals inward.
Occluder is not a closed mesh Same reason — it is a volume, not a surface.
Lens flare has no elements, or element(s) N have no material A flare draws its elements, and each one draws a material.
Projector has no material The format keeps a material number, and zero is not one. Point it at one.
Mirror has a view box with no width (or height, or depth) Give the flat axis a length, or press Fit View Box.
Armature has been moved as an object Its own location, rotation and scale are left for the body's movement. Clear its transform, or press Set Default Mesh Origin.
Armature has no skinned mesh but a Delta Transform Give it the character mesh it is for, named base with an Armature modifier — or clear the Delta Transform for a skeleton meant to stand alone.
Armature has N skinned meshes One armature carries one. Join them, or reparent the extras.
Joint has no influence box and no weights Paint weights for it, or give it a box and press Fit Influence Box.
Single Mesh has shape keys Shape keys are morph targets: set the Visual Type to Morph or Single Morph.
Morph group basis shape key is missing The group's first target names a key that is no longer on the mesh.
Name is N bytes long The format holds names in a fixed space. Shorten it.

Warnings worth reading

  • A texture the maps folder does not hold.
  • A character mesh not called base.
  • A joint with no box, written the default one.
  • Weights corrected to the two the game allows.

Tip

The dialog shows the first dozen entries. Window ▸ Toggle System Console has every one, in order, with the frame or material each belongs to.
