Troubleshooting

Everything imported grey

The Texture Folder is not set, or does not point at the game's maps directory. See Installation and Setup. The console says so at import time.

A part of my car is missing in game, with no error

Almost always the frame type. The game looks a name up as a Dummy or as a Visual, and a lookup for one never finds the other. Check the part's Frame Type in the object panel against LS3D-4DS-Dummy-Names.html, and check the spelling — DWHL and DWHR are upper case.

My character's limbs bend but the body stays put

The mesh is not called base, or the armature is not standing at hip height. See Armatures and Skinning — press Set Default Mesh Origin.

The export refuses and I do not understand why

Press Check 4DS Scene and read the whole report in the system console. Every refusal is listed in Checks and Messages with what to do about it.

The panels are not there

  • The add-on is not enabled, or a Blender upgrade left it behind in the old configuration folder. Install it again.
  • The 4DS Morph tab says what is missing when the selected object is not a morph.

An animation plays the wrong way round

A rotation of more than half a circle between two keys plays the short way in game. Tick Fix Long Rotation Turns when exporting.

My light does nothing in game

A light lights the sectors that list it, and that list lives in the mission's scene2.bin, not in the model — so a light exported in a model never comes on by itself. Lights#switching-it-on-in-game has both halves of what has to agree, and the light panel says the same under Switching It On in scene2.bin.

The two that catch people: Enable off in the object's Culling flags, which also takes the object out of collision and sound; and an Animated Objects count above zero with no .5ds beside the model, which fails the whole model load and takes every scene2.bin entry for it down too.

Nothing here matches

Import a model the game ships that does the thing you are trying to do, and look at how it is built. That reference is always right.
