EPUB Compatibility

Granthalay accepts standard EPUB archives and currently handles:

  • EPUB 3 navigation documents and EPUB 2 NCX tables of contents
  • Common metadata and cover declarations
  • Embedded images and SVG
  • Internal CSS and archive resource references
  • Reflowable column pagination and a heuristic illustrated-book mode

Known limitations

  • DRM, publication scripting, media overlays, encrypted fonts, vertical writing, fixed-layout metadata, and complex publisher CSS may not render correctly.
  • Chapter-count-based layout detection can misclassify some books.
  • Page counts are viewport-dependent estimates.
  • Search, annotation synchronization, catalogs, library export, and PDF support are not currently implemented.
  • Highlight restoration depends on matching selected text and nearby context. A substantially changed edition may leave a highlight unresolved rather than attaching it to unrelated text.
  • Duplicate imports are not detected.
  • The PWA supports root hosting and the official /Granthalay/ GitHub Pages deployment.

Automated fixtures cover representative EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 structures, navigation, spine order, internal CSS, raster and SVG resources, and malformed archives. They are a regression baseline, not a complete EPUB conformance suite.

For a rendering report, use a public-domain or minimal reproduction. Include the browser, operating system, EPUB version, fixed/reflowable layout, and screenshots. Never upload a copyrighted EPUB.
