Void Strike 65 v0.3.0 — the Blockade Breaker, behind its banner

Choose a tag to compare

@Setech-pl Setech-pl released this 19 Oct 12:26

Pre-release at the end of milestone M5 (loading platform and bosses). Tested on a real Atari 65XE through an SIO2SD.

What you can play: the downloadable ATR is level 1, ending on its boss, the Blockade Breaker, then the level summary and back to the menu. Three more bosses — the Void Citadel, the Siege Spine and the Bastion — are built and arrive with the campaign, when the levels that reach them are added.

New: the Blockade Breaker

  • Two laser cannons fire in turn under an armoured spine, behind a belt of armour plates; each beam warms up visibly and audibly before it fires.
  • An escort of Interceptors arrives from the first gun or cannon you destroy, then one every 3–4 seconds until the boss falls — never two at once.
  • A module you hit but do not destroy flashes, and spent HULL quarters vanish from the HUD as spent BOOST cells do.
  • The boss art pass: the boss is redrawn and lit from above, each band row in its own shades.

New: the boss loading banner

When level 1 ends, the screen goes black for a third of a second, then the boss's banner comes up: its picture, WARNING, its name and INCOMING, and a loading bar that fills as the boss loads from the disk.

Changed: the Interceptor

  • It no longer rams you: it holds above you, fires only when you are in its column, loops twice in level 1, then climbs out.
  • It takes three hits; its red pods flash on a hit it survives.
  • Your shots can catch it in every phase of its flight: it hovers over your ship's centre and does not step sideways while your shot is crossing its column.

Changed: the hit box and the difficulty

  • Enemy shots and boss beams hit your ship where it is drawn, across its full width (16 horizontal positions), instead of only its left half (8).
  • The Blockade Breaker is tuned as the first and gentlest step of the four bosses' difficulty curve; EASY gives a clearly shorter fight and HARD a clearly longer one than MEDIUM.

Fixed (the M5 cross-model audit)

  • The hit sound plays the same rising sweep on every machine; on a real Atari it no longer depends on what the paddle port reads.
  • An Interceptor coming back from its hold no longer dives into a ship sitting still near the top of the screen.
  • A hit just before the boss arrives no longer mutes the music's lead through the banner and the load.
  • The release package built from the source (npm run package) now carries LICENSE, LICENSE-ASSETS and THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
  • Developer tools: the real-SIO diagnostic emulator is always rebuilt, so the hardware boot and audio checks test the right build.

Tested on real hardware

On a real Atari 65XE (PAL) through an SIO2SD: boot to the menu with its music, level 1, the boss's banner with its loading bar, the Blockade Breaker's fight with sound, lasers and escort, and the level summary. The Bastion's banner and fight were also checked on real hardware, on a review build.

Known issues

  • Only level 1 is on the disk; after its summary the game returns to the menu. More levels and the campaign come in a later milestone.
  • Loading at standard SIO speed is slow (about 30 s to the menu); a fast loader is planned as an optional later step.
  • Difficulty is tuned with a test bot; tuning with real players comes later.

How to play

Download void-strike-65.atr and boot it as drive 1 on a PAL Atari 65XE/800XL (64 KB), with or without OPTION held, from an SIO2SD or a disk drive, or in an emulator, e.g. atari800 -xl -pal -nopatch void-strike-65.atr (-nopatch loads like the real machine; without it, it loads faster). The game saves your best score to the disk, so play a copy.

Zmienione: obszar trafienia i poziom trudności

Naprawione (audyt M5 innym modelem)

Void Strike 65 v0.2.3 — boots and plays its sound on real hardware

Choose a tag to compare

@Setech-pl Setech-pl released this 10 Oct 10:24

Checkpoint pre-release on the way to v0.3.0 (milestone M5: loading platform and bosses). This is the first ATR that boots on a real Atari.

Fixed: the disk now loads on real hardware

Every earlier ATR (v0.1.0 to v0.2.2) stopped on a red screen after about 15 seconds on a real Atari 65XE/800XL. The loader asked the operating system for most of the game's sectors without the data. Emulators with an accelerated disk routine (Atari800's default "SIO patch") loaded them anyway, so the fault never showed there. v0.2.3 loads through the standard disk protocol, as the real machine does, and is tested that way. Loading takes longer at standard SIO speed: about 30 seconds from power-on to the main menu on an SIO2SD (27 s measured in an emulator without the SIO patch).

Fixed: the full sound on real hardware

On a real Atari, half of the sound was missing: the menu played only its drums and bass, without the melody, and in play there were no shots, no engine hum, no capital-ship explosions and no boss hum. After every disk read, the sound chip (POKEY) was left in its serial receive mode, which freezes two of its four sound channels on the real chip. Emulators such as Atari800 do not reproduce this, so everything sounded right there. v0.2.3 switches the receive mode off after the boot and after every load; the change was confirmed by ear on a real 65XE.

What's new since v0.2.2

  • Light enemies in level 1 after the capital ship: a swarm of both Light types, two elite Raider sectors and a Bomber pair between them.
  • Sector flow. A space sector ends as soon as its waves are spent and the field is clear, instead of running out its full length; much less empty flying after the capital ship. The boss arrives sooner, and it waits until falling debris has left the screen.
  • The boss platform for the coming regions: the booster bar stays on screen through the boss's arrival, and no gun fires on the frame you destroy a module. The boss finale (three-shot volleys from every surviving gun once the last armour falls) exists only on the review routes for regions 2–4; level 1's Blockade Breaker fights as before.
  • Your shots stay visible in the band under the boss until they reach their target. The radio-chatter line no longer overlaps the statistics on the summary screen.
  • The target machine is the 64 KB Atari 65XE / 800XL (PAL); a 130XE also works.

Known issues

  • Loading at standard SIO speed is slow (about 30 s to the menu); a fast loader is planned as an optional later step.
  • Difficulty is not tuned yet (balancing is planned for a later milestone).

Po polsku

Wydanie kontrolne (pre-release) w drodze do v0.3.0 (kamień milowy M5: platforma ładowania i bossowie).

  • Docelowa maszyna to Atari 65XE / 800XL z 64 KB (PAL); 130XE też działa.

Znane problemy

Void Strike 65 v0.2.2 — the first boss

@Setech-pl Setech-pl released this 08 Oct 01:27

⚠ Does not boot on real hardware: this ATR stops on a red screen during loading on a real Atari (it only runs in emulators with an accelerated SIO routine); use v0.2.3 or later.

Checkpoint pre-release on the way to v0.3.0 (milestone M5: loading platform and bosses). Level 1 now ends in a full boss fight.

What's new since v0.2.1

  • First boss: Blockade Breaker. A layered fortress drifting across the top of the screen. Shoot away its armour plates to expose the guns behind them; the boss falls when its last weapon is destroyed. Every destroyed module scores, and every third one drops a booster capsule.
  • Boss lasers. A projector tower charges with a flickering, widening warning line, then fires a beam straight down. Destroying the plate in front of it makes it fire at once, so expose it, dodge, then finish it. At most two beams at a time.
  • Loading and summary screens at the start of a game and after the level, with your statistics and best score saved to the disk.
  • Disk safety. The game saves only to its own disk and checks every block it loads; a foreign or damaged disk stops on a "WRONG DISK" / "DISK READ FAILED" screen instead of crashing or being written to.
  • New palette. Your shots are mint; enemies and their explosions are magenta, with small white-cored break-ups.
  • Shorter level 1 before the boss; the MEDIUM boss fight lasts about one and a half to two minutes.
  • Many timing, robustness and test-coverage fixes, including all findings of an independent cross-model code audit that affect the game.

Known issues

  • Your shots can disappear in the dark strip under the boss before reaching the turrets.
  • After the capital ship, level 1 has no Light enemy waves yet.
  • On the loading screen, the radio-chatter placeholder line overlaps the statistics.
  • Difficulty is not tuned yet (balancing is planned for a later milestone).

How to play

Download void-strike-65.atr and boot it as drive 1 on a PAL Atari 65XE/800XL (64 KB) or in an emulator, e.g. atari800 -xe -pal -nobasic void-strike-65.atr. The game saves your best score to the disk, so play a copy.

Void Strike 65 v0.2.1 (pre-release)

Vertical space shooter for the Atari 65XE/130XE (PAL), by Setech Game Studio. This build contains level 1.
Checkpoint pre-release before the next milestone, which reworks disk loading (code overlays and a fast SIO loader).

What's new since v0.2.0

  • Smoother frames when a Raider or Bomber is destroyed: the break-up no longer lands on a background-scroll frame. The worst-frame timing margin rose from 788 to 1,439 cycles.
  • New README: a gameplay GIF captured from this ATR, a timing chart across versions, and screenshots recaptured from the ATR.

Hardware testers wanted

The next milestone reworks disk loading (code overlays and a fast SIO loader with automatic fallback to standard speed). Booting without holding OPTION has so far been proven only in an emulator. If you can boot this ATR on a real PAL Atari XL/XE — from SIO2SD, SIO2PC or a disk drive, with BASIC on or off — please report how it went in Issues: the machine, the drive or device, and whether it reached the menu and played. This build is the reference for comparing the new loader.

Known issues

  • Level 1 only: no boss and no level-to-level campaign yet.
  • If the player dies while a shot is over a debris piece, the debris can vanish for one frame.
  • RESET reboots the disk and returns to the title screen.

How to play

  • atari800: atari800 -xe -pal void-strike-65-v0.2.1.atr (BASIC on or off; no need to hold OPTION).
  • Altirra: 65XE or 130XE, PAL, boot the ATR.
  • Real hardware: SIO2SD or a disk drive; BASIC may be on or off.
  • Joystick in port 1, fire button to shoot.

Po polsku

Wydanie kontrolne przed kolejnym etapem, który przebuduje ładowanie z dysku (nakładki kodu i szybki loader SIO z automatycznym powrotem do standardowej prędkości).
