Source inventory and inspection receipt

See packet status. Printed page numbers below are the original edition's numbers, not PDF indexes. Page-specific image URLs and SHA-256 values are preserved in packet.json.

Governing edition and witnesses

S01: governing witness. William Lilly, Christian Astrology, Modestly Treated of in Three Books, first edition, London: Thomas Brudenell for John Partridge and Humphrey Blunden, 1647. The Wellcome catalogue identifies the publication, Wing L2215, English language and Public Domain Mark. Its copy note says the last leaf is wanting; this does not establish a lacuna in the selected general-rule pages. The Wellcome/Internet Archive scan and IIIF manifest provide the photographed witness. Credit: Wellcome Collection, Public Domain Mark. The manifest has 894 canvases.

S02: alternate scan witness, same edition. The EEBO-derived Internet Archive item provides an alternate page image and OCR lineage. Its metadata, OCR and scandata were acquired. This packet does not claim visual line-by-line collation of that entire witness or establish whether all its photography derives from a different physical copy. The title's edition and its scan lineage must not be confused with independent doctrinal authority.

S03: modern navigation aid. The Skyscript Christian Astrology index helps locate chapters and examples. Modern transcriptions, redrawn charts and editorial numbering do not override the photographs. No modern chart artwork, long transcription or copyrighted editorial catalogue is copied into this packet. The catalogue below uses our own compact descriptions and original page checks.

S04: existing Moira admission evidence. The August source dossier records the bounded v1 lineage lilly_1647_ca_books_i_ii_v1. The July perfection validation record is historical evidence. Neither replaces the primary pages or current code.

A filename search of C:\dev\ASTROLOGY-BOOKS-DATABASE for Lilly/Christian names did not locate a first-edition source file. That was a filename search, not a full-text exclusion of unnamed or bundled material. The reproducible primary witnesses above govern this packet.

Source units and depth of examination

Unit Printed pages Current examination Admission use
U01: erection, clocks, interpolation Selected 35, 39-42, 47; navigation 25, 33 Selected original images inspected; no complete reconstruction of the ephemeris Historical time/coordinate provenance; three Book I exercises
U02: houses and significators 47-56 Original images inspected, including house nature, angularity and topics Role vocabulary and topic source map; detailed topic clauses still separate
U03: dignity table 104 Original table visually inspected; not independently double-entered cell by cell Exact table identity, sect and boundary dependencies
U04: aspects, condition and reception 107-115 Original images inspected Orbs, application, separation, reception, VOC, solar condition and fortitude dependency
U05: considerations 121-123 Original images inspected Contextual cautions and qualified exceptions
U06: roles and perfection 123-127 Original images inspected Principals/Moon, aspect-specific perfection, translation, collection and rejected dwelling shortcut
U07: turning 127-128 Original images inspected Relative perspective and turning continuation; p.127 alone is incomplete
U08: worked cases Catalogue pages 135-473 All 35 distinct Book II figure pages visually checked for headings/diagram presence; p.456 reuse checked Catalogue admission only; no full coordinate/judgement/outcome admission
U09: house-method context 491, Book III Original image inspected Auxiliary distinction between exact natal construction and ordinary questions
U10: remaining prerequisites Other Book I planet/sign chapters; detailed topic chapters in Book II Not freshly collated as a whole in this packet Deferred dependencies; no completeness claim

U04 does not claim that the entire preceding aspect chapter or every following table has been collated. Pages 116-120 were acquired as nearby navigation material but were not promoted merely because their files exist. Chapter and page ranges specify a bounded tranche, not a complete critical edition.

For U02, source-based topic anchors are: first house pp.50-51; second pp.51-52; third p.52; fourth pp.52-53; fifth p.53; sixth pp.53-54; seventh p.54; eighth pp.54-55; ninth p.55; tenth p.55; eleventh p.56; twelfth p.56. These anchors do not prove that a complete topic judgement can be reduced to its cusp ruler.

Direct original-page reading anchors: p.35; p.41; p.47; p.49; p.104; p.107; p.110; p.111; p.112; p.113; p.114; p.115; p.121; p.122; p.123; p.124; p.125; p.126; p.127; p.128; p.491.

Page locator and acquisition policy

On 2026-10-22 UTC, acquisition retrieved eight source/metadata files and 79 selected Wellcome JPEG pages without reported acquisition errors. Each image record contains printed page, exact manifest canvas ID, zero-based canvas index, requested image URL, byte count and SHA-256. Canvas IDs were resolved from manifest labels, not inferred from a single offset. Original page/image indexes differ across the Wellcome and EEBO presentations.

For example, printed p.104 is canvas index 137; p.127 is 160; p.128 is 161; p.442 is 475; p.491 is 524 in the acquired Wellcome manifest. These are verified individual mappings, not a rule to derive every other page. A stable source locator should retain both the printed page and exact canvas/image URL.

Scratch originals and receipts remain outside the repository at C:\dev\outputs\lilly-core-admission-20261022\. The acquisition receipt lists eight files under sources/; page_acquisition.json lists the 79 images under pages/. SHA-256 values identify the bytes inspected, not the correctness of their content. A changed remote image requires a new receipt rather than silent replacement of the recorded hash.

The complete scan PDF was not downloaded. Selected IIIF page images supplied the visual checks. OCR is especially unreliable for planetary/zodiac glyphs, retrograde marks, dates, table columns and numbers near the binding.

Observed source and documentation conflicts

  • P.107 prints two orb sets and allows alternatives. A current fixed table is an operational choice, not a uniquely prescribed table in this passage.
  • P.113 appears to give a combustion example with Sun 18 Aries and Jupiter 28 Aries, although the preceding definition uses 8 degrees 30 minutes. Retain the apparent inconsistency for alternate-image collation (A13).
  • P.397's fish example has a chart/narrative year discrepancy (A24). Calendar or year-style explanations are hypotheses until a conversion is documented.
  • P.399 contains the Waller/Hopton diagram although navigation references can point to p.400. The absent brother's figure is p.196, with judgement at p.197.
  • P.455 supplies the figure reused by the separate office question at p.456. Do not invent a second independent numerical chart.
  • The old July validation prose names Dorothean/Egyptian defaults. Current LillyPerfectionPolicy explicitly names Lilly's 1647 term/triplicity tables. The old prose was not rewritten; this packet records the drift against the stated code baseline.

Reuse and evidence limits

The original 1647 work is the public-domain source. The packet uses compact paraphrases and factual catalogue entries with original-scan locators. Modern editorial additions retain their own rights. File availability is not source admission, and scan agreement is not independent confirmation of an event or the predictive validity of horary.
