Roadmap and Known Issues

RerunTV is in beta. This page is upfront about what is planned and what is limited. It is a plan, not a promise.

Planned

  • Code signing for the Windows installers, so SmartScreen stops warning. This needs a certificate and a validated publisher; the plan is to apply to an open-source signing program.
  • An Electron upgrade to the next major version, with a full test pass first. The runtime affects the sandboxed preload, the `app://» protocol and the plugin processes, so it will not be merged on a version bump alone.

Recently added

  • A demo pack on every release: RerunTV-demo-library.zip holds generated, copyright-free test video, so you can try RerunTV without Node, ffmpeg or any media of your own.
  • An installer smoke test in CI: every push builds the real installer, installs it silently and launches it, so a broken package is caught before a release.
  • Discussions for questions, ideas and show-and-tell.

Known limitations

  • The installers are unsigned, so Windows shows a SmartScreen warning. Check downloads as described in Installation.
  • Windows is the only platform with packaged installers. macOS and Linux builds are configured but untested.
  • The LAN features are plain HTTP, protected by a pairing code, and meant for a network you trust. See Security.
  • It is vibe-coded and has not been independently audited. See How This Project Is Built.
  • Third-party plugins are trusted code. Only install plugins you trust. See Plugins.
  • Playback uses the browser engine's codecs: .mp4 (H.264) and .webm work best, and other formats are converted with ffmpeg on demand. See Troubleshooting.
  • The Android clients (android-tv-client» and android-companion-client») are in the repository but are not part of the installer and are not built by CI. Build them with Gradle.
  • Some effects flicker or flash. See Comfort and Photosensitivity.

  • Discussions are for questions and ideas, and Issues are where bugs are tracked.
