FAQ
Does this slow down my internet?
No. GoodbyeDPI only modifies the very first packet of each TLS connection. Your download speed, upload speed, and ping are unaffected.
Will it affect online games?
No. Games primarily use UDP, which GoodbyeDPI doesn't touch. Even games using TCP see no measurable impact.
Does it work with streaming (YouTube, Twitch, Netflix)?
Yes. All traffic flows normally — only the initial handshake is modified.
Is it really free?
Yes. GoodByeDPI GUI is MIT-licensed open source, permanently free.
If it helps you, consider supporting the project 💝
Does it send my data anywhere?
No. The app runs entirely on your machine. There are:
- ❌ No analytics
- ❌ No telemetry
- ❌ No servers
- ❌ No logs sent anywhere
The only network request is the update check (a GET to GitHub's releases page).
Does it hide my IP address?
No. GoodbyeDPI is not a VPN. Your ISP still sees your IP — they just can't filter by content anymore.
Can my ISP detect I'm using it?
Possibly. But GoodbyeDPI's traffic modifications are designed to look like normal fragmented TLS traffic — indistinguishable from legitimate network behavior.
Is it legal?
This tool is provided for educational and personal use. Legality depends on your country. Check your local laws.
How is it different from a VPN?
| GoodByeDPI GUI | VPN | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed impact | None | 10-40% slower |
| Hides IP | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
| Encrypts traffic | ❌ No (already TLS) | ✅ Yes |
| Bypasses DPI | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Servers needed | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
| Free | ✅ Yes | Usually paid |
TL;DR: GoodbyeDPI is lighter, faster, and free — but doesn't hide your IP.
Can I use it WITH a VPN?
Technically yes, but it's usually unnecessary. If the VPN already bypasses filtering, stop GoodbyeDPI to save resources.
If your VPN doesn't bypass DPI (rare), running both may help — but they can also conflict.
What's the difference between Fast and Compatible?
See Modes Explained. Short version:
- ⚡ Fast — reverse fragmentation + fake SEQ (aggressive)
- 🛡 Compatible — auto-TTL (gentler)
Does it work on Windows 7/8?
No. Only Windows 10 and Windows 11 are officially supported. Older versions lack required APIs.
Does it work on macOS or Linux?
No. GoodbyeDPI is a Windows-only tool — it uses the WinDivert driver, which is Windows-specific.
Does it work in a VM?
Sometimes. Requires:
- ✅ Bridged network (not NAT)
- ✅ Admin privileges
- ✅ Host to allow WinDivert access
VM support isn't officially tested.
Do I need Python installed?
No. The released EXE is fully self-contained. Python is only needed if you're building from source.
Do I need to keep the window open?
Not necessarily. Close the window and choose Minimize to Tray — the app keeps running in the background.
But you do need the app running for GoodbyeDPI to work. It's the launcher.
Can I close the app and still have DPI bypassed?
No. The app launches and controls goodbyedpi.exe. Close the app → the process is killed → DPI filtering resumes.
For persistent bypass, enable Run on Windows startup.
How do I know which mode is best for me?
Start with ⚡ Fast. If it works, you're done. If not, try 🛡 Compatible. If neither works, go 🔧 Custom.
See Modes Explained for a flowchart.
What happens if I close the window?
An Exit Options dialog appears:
| Option | Result |
|---|---|
| Exit | Fully quits |
| Minimize to Tray | Runs in background |
| Cancel | Keeps window open |
What arguments should I use?
Start with the Arguments Guide (the ? button). If you want ready-made combos, see Custom Arguments.
Why does the field show a warning icon?
The live validator found something suspicious:
- 🟡 Yellow ⚠ — warning (still runs)
- 🔴 Red ✕ — error (will warn before starting)
Hover over the indicator to see details.
Can I save my arguments as a preset?
Not yet — this feature is planned for a future version. For now, copy your args to a text file.
How do I update?
Automatic: The app checks on every launch.
Manual: Click 🔄 Check for updates at the bottom-left.
If a new version exists, an Update dialog appears with a Download button.
Does it auto-update itself?
No. Currently you download the new EXE and replace the old one. Self-updating is planned for a future version.
How often are updates released?
Irregularly. When there are meaningful improvements or bug fixes. Watch the repo for notifications:
