Obtaining One For Yourself

If you want one of these - you have a few choices, namely:

  1. Buy one from us.
  2. Make some yourself - that's what this Wiki can help you with.
  3. Buy one from your favorite slot car parts vendor: MidAmerica or maybe sometime soon ... Betta or K-Slot Car or AB Slotsport in the UK, or do-slot in the EU, or RedFox.

We do not keep a huge inventory of parts, and after some recent successes demand for them has been high. If we don't have them to sell we'll tell you when we have some more.

We've tried to keep the prices reasonable. However we don't get large volume discounts from the board vendor we use, and have to pay UK VAT and import duty on them. This adds considerable overhead. (I could rant about this for hours but I am told it's not very patriotic and gets old quickly. So if you have a friend in the UK government who could do something about this travesty I'd like an introduction and an opportunity to explain how bad this is for the UK).

You can make one yourself. Everything is here to do that. It is not hard to do and you'll have some fun doing it and learn some new skills. If you want to make a lot and sell them - please do ... The basic steps to do so are: create an account on JLCPCB, upload some files from the KiCad production directory, possibly order missing parts from them to make it, wait a while, download the boot loader and firmware, flash the part, test it, put it in a chassis.

We've also had some experience of using OurPCB who might be a better option for you.

If you want help doing this and the WiKi doesn't explain it all, please feel free to get in touch with us.

We hope that some of the vendors want to get involved and see an opportunity to make and sell these at a profit. As you'll see there is some effort and cost involved for them to do that. By being able to commit to larger volumes they'll be able to offer them at lower cost. If you want to sell them commercially we'd like to collect a small royalty payment from you.

Besides the eCom there's an opportunity to create a third party marketplace around it for: an eCom tester, a flashing jig, motor tester etc. We want to encourage and see more of this. If you have ideas, please get in touch.

There's also an opportunity to move the state of the art forward by innovating the hardware and the firmware. We have several ideas for this that hopefully we will be able to implement. If you have the skills and want to help - again, please get in touch. There's also nothing to stop you doing it on your own, however it would be nice to share your results for the benefit of everyone.

Whatever money we make from this effort will find its way back into the hobby.
