2.4 Further Feedback from Prototype Evaluation session
Feedback – Local Knowledge
I like the idea of being able to browse location based news in a social setting. Important things are the UX of the interface and the feel, and how it promotes conversation. I think a nice challenge will be how do you make the news easily injestable, so people aren't reading in silence. I like the idea of news augmenting the conversation. I think it would be good recording yourselves having some conversations about news at a specific locations, and then see how the conversation could have been augmented. – checking ambient noise and ability to converse. Another good feed is the CIA world factbook
Such a table is used in a few public places or also companies to get more information about the company for example and make the experience with the company more interactive. It is good to use it in terms of news as well. Could be also a table to learn new stuff - about countries or sights - maybe include wikipedia article? I like that you divided the table in two different parts. Only negative point - I would personally prefer to have a talk with my friend instead of using the table at a coffee shop. I think it's good to use the API's and twitter feeds and combine them.
I can see how this could be really fun/interesting to use, especially when there is breaking news. You could add something like the live 'we feel' twitter emotion analysis (http://wefeel.csiro.au/#/). How would I share something I've found on the table? Because it's at a public location, I wouldn't want to login to a social media account. Maybe think about ways the information user see can be shared. (screen shot and email)
Targeting the app to the "coffee shop" is a really good idea - you can design the whole concept around it and I think the "table" element would sit quite naturally alongside it. I do wonder whether the "globe" concept is the most appropriate for the "coffee shop" setting though. Does it fit in with the vibe of a coffee shop, or make the best use of the table itself? I wonder if the globe might end up being a little restrictive for the types of content you could present to your audience - not all news is based around location.
• Seems as though the idea has already progressed and you have a very solid prototype in mind. • University learning centres might be another location for installation. • Perhaps local news (local = area near where the table is installed) could be involved more e.g. local news is displayed by default • Could augment the news with demographic/sociographic of the user, such as users needing accounts.
Great presentation and the idea is amazing. So the users are selecting the news by the locations on the earth interface and then able to select the news categories of that location. Is it possible to select the news category first, then related news are popping up from the map from different locations. Dose the app save the browsing history? Can users delete the history of what news they have read, for privacy? (Trending or most popular trending – big dreaming) Other than reading news in one same table, maybe you can have a function for example to send the news you are reading to other tables in the coffee shop, which is more social.
I like the fact that this is not only another web app or news portal, something physical that people can use other than their phone. But it does seems like the heart of the product still lies in the software whereas the table has a very digital interaction method which makes it feel like that the app it self can be ported on any other platform and it can still perform similar task. I kind of wonder, what if this things are inside a train, or a bus it would make commuting more productive and meaningful, probably a conversation starter between commuters.
Great presentation. The visuals really aided the communication of the idea. I find the proposed context of your application really interesting. Though I think it would probably be beyond the scope of this course, I think it would be really cool if the table could involve tangible interactions rather than just hosting a web platform. Bringing your paper prototype into actual coffee shops and interviewing people there could probably give you some more insights and help you to further refine your design. I look forward to seeing your outcome!
Best presentation overall! The demo helped a lot for the audience to understand the concept. Putting these interactive tables in a coffee shop, or bus stop could engage users to read and share the news. The biggest challenge will be how could you design this table's interface in a way which can facilitate social interaction in a very smooth way; people wouldn't want to read long paragraphs when they are with someone because it creates silence. Also, it will be helpful if I can take away the news I viewed : possibly by generating a QR code, a bit.ly link or something similar.
It is a very interesting idea by implementing a digital news into a coffee table. Everyone can chat and discuss the news and view the news while enjoying their coffee.I just concern about the sharing to twitter part, The user need to login their account in the table to share their news? if yes how do you guys overcome the privacy/security? and it will be great have waterproof to protect the table because people will accidentally spilt coffee on the table. Overall is a very great idea.
But I'm still not very sure what problem that this concept is trying to solve, I think it can be more specific. I like the coffee shop scenario that you guys made to illustrate the usage of your installation - it allows people to share the news feed that they read at the same time. And you also mentioned it could be used for educational purpose, which allows teachers to deliver journalism information to students. Although the platforms of these two scenarios are similar, but users' behaviours involved in those are quite different: if people are having coffee, their attentions may also be triggered by many peripheral clues (noise, walk-by pedestrians, etc), which requires the system to present simple yet concise information; whereas in a classroom setting, there may be fewer distractions and users could intake information with more complexity. This is just an example, either of them will bring much variety when it comes to interface design. So when you try to refine your problem space, I'd suggest you do some on-site observations or experiments (e.g. ask your potential users to simulate the scenario of sharing news between each other with using existing technology). I think these approaches will be helpful for you to identify the dilemmas and the real problem :)
Hey, you have done a awesome presentation overall, and the interaction table is a good platform to search and share news for users. Based on your description, it allows user to switch news by twisting table which provides a emotional user experience. And by dragging news to the centre to list the priority of news, then more users will focus some important news. These features are definitely useful for social communication and interaction. And from the mockup shown in the presentation, there are several points may need to be considered:
- Personally I think the icons(buttons) are quite a lot in the main page, I can see various of social communication application icons and other kind of applications. I would recommend to minimise those labels and make some categories instead;
- As you mentioned in the presentation, this would be a creative way for people sharing or viewing news in public areas, like coffee shop. So I hope to make it not only like a traditional application, try to find a easy way that enables user to digest information in a entertainment way; I really like the idea you shared and hope my suggestions can help you. Well done!
Grant Invest time into exploring interactions. On fB comment that is sad leaves room for ambigiuiity. Asynchronatic interaction – you can be able to explore with a lot of interactions because you are there in a social environment. Standup is to the group and
