Backup Guide

Create a backup

  1. Fully close Codex.
  2. Connect the USB drive or select another backup location.
  3. Start Codex-Lifeboat.exe.
  4. Select Create backup.
  5. Review the detected projects.
  6. Leave all projects selected for a complete backup.
  7. Exclude a project only when its files do not need to be recoverable.
  8. Select the destination folder.
  9. Wait until Codex Lifeboat reports that the backup is ready.
  10. Select Verify backup and choose the new backup.

What is included?

A complete backup can include:

  • Active and archived conversations
  • Pinned and projectless conversations
  • Conversation relationships and available attachments
  • Complete project directories
  • Git repositories and uncommitted files
  • Skills
  • Portable Codex configuration
  • Project and conversation registrations
  • Portable path and backup-lineage information

Authentication, installation identifiers, machine identity, caches, locks, and runtime secrets are intentionally excluded.

Notices and warnings

A backup may complete with notices. This does not automatically mean that it failed.

For example, historical attachments may no longer exist locally, or an old path reference may still point to its previous location. Open the details to see what was found and how it is handled.

A successful Verify backup result confirms the integrity of the files that are actually present in the backup.

Security

Backups are not encrypted. Treat them as confidential and keep the storage device secure.
