Frequently Asked Questions

Is Codex Lifeboat an official OpenAI application?

No. Codex Lifeboat is an independent open-source community project.

Which operating systems are supported?

Windows 10 and Windows 11 x64.

Is installation required?

No. Extract the portable ZIP and start Codex-Lifeboat.exe.

Are backups encrypted?

No. Backups may contain confidential files, including source code, .env files, and API keys.

Does it include conversations that are not inside a project?

Yes. Active, archived, pinned, and projectless local conversations are inventoried.

Does moving a conversation into a project move all project files?

No. A conversation assignment and a physical project folder are different things. Codex Lifeboat inventories both and preserves their relationship where possible.

Does a path-portability notice mean the backup failed?

Not necessarily. Unknown references are preserved unchanged. The notice means that a saved link may still point to its previous location after restoration.

Use the details screen to see:

  • The relevant field
  • The path category
  • Whether the location currently exists
  • Whether the associated data is included
  • Whether the path can be translated
  • The likely impact

Why is the recovery-point list empty?

Recovery points are created on the destination computer immediately before a restore. They are not ordinary USB backups. The list remains empty until that computer has performed a restore.

Why can verification take a long time?

Verification independently reads and hashes the backup files. Large projects or projects containing dependency folders can contain hundreds of thousands of files.

Can I exclude a large project?

Yes. Projects are selected by default, but individual project folders can be excluded. Codex conversations and portable settings remain protected.

Where can I report a problem?

Open a GitHub issue. The diagnostics center can create an anonymized report suitable for attaching to an issue.
