Opt-in DSCP marker on sandbox egress. Off by default.

Config

SANDBOX_EGRESS_DSCP (uint8, default 0, range 0..63). 0 disables; 8 (CS1) is the recommended value. Range-validated in ParseConfig.

When disabled: no iptables rule, no setsockopt, no xt_DSCP kernel-module dependency.

What it touches

Two paths, both needed for the marker to actually land on the wire:

  1. Direct egress (UDP/ICMP/raw IP/non-proxied TCP) — iptables mangle POSTROUTING -o vpeer -j DSCP --set-dscp <n> inside the sandbox netns.
  2. tcpfirewall TCP proxy hopIP_TOS + IPV6_TCLASS set on the upstream socket via Dialer.Control / ControlContext. Without this, every TCP connection from a sandbox loses the mark at the local proxy because the upstream socket is host-originated.

IPv6 supported (sets both family options, tolerates ENOPROTOOPT from the non-matching one).

Test plan

  • Default-off: deploy without the env var → no mangle rule, orchestrator boots without xt_DSCP.
  • Enabled: SANDBOX_EGRESS_DSCP=8 → mangle rule present; tcpdump on the host gateway shows tos 0x20 for TCP/UDP/ICMP from the sandbox.
  • IPv6: TCP to an IPv6-only host carries Traffic Class 0x20.
  • Out of range: SANDBOX_EGRESS_DSCP=99 → orchestrator refuses to start.

…cation

Tag every packet leaving a sandbox netns with DSCP=8 (CS1 / Scavenger,
RFC 3662) via an iptables mangle POSTROUTING rule on the vpeer interface.

Gives operators and downstream firewalls a stable L3 marker that:
- works for any protocol (TCP, UDP, ICMP, raw IP), not just HTTPS
- cannot be tampered with from inside the guest VM (rule lives in the
host's view of the netns; FC guest only sees virtio-net)
- auto-cleans up with the netns, no extra teardown logic needed

DSCP is preserved across SNAT/MASQUERADE and intra-VPC routing, so
BYOC customers can match on the marker in their own VPC firewalls
without relying on L7 inspection.

PR Summary

Medium Risk
Changes sandbox egress networking (iptables mangle and proxy dial socket options); default-off limits blast radius, but misconfiguration or missing xt_DSCP when enabled can block network setup or leave TCP marks inconsistent with direct egress.

Overview
Adds an opt-in SANDBOX_EGRESS_DSCP setting (default off, valid 0–63) so operators can stamp sandbox egress for downstream QoS or firewall policy. When enabled, traffic leaving the sandbox netns on the vpeer uplink gets a DSCP mark via mangle/POSTROUTING, and TCP that exits through the tcpfirewall proxy gets the same class on upstream sockets via IP_TOS / IPV6_TCLASS so the mark is not lost on the host-originated hop. Invalid values fail at config parse; a root-gated integration test checks the iptables rule when DSCP is set to CS1 (8).

Code Review

This pull request adds a DSCP marker (CS1/Scavenger, value '8') to all egress packets from a sandbox network namespace by appending an iptables POSTROUTING mangle rule on the vpeer interface. No review comments were provided, and there is no feedback to address.

Important

The consumer version of Gemini Code Assist on GitHub is being sunset. Starting June 18, 2026, new organization installations will be blocked, and all code review activity will officially cease on July 17, 2026.

The change makes sense to me, I am just wondering if we should make this optional/configurable only for those who need it.

You can always just set it to 0 by default and that disables this. Maybe env variable would be good next steps though.

Privileged integration test that runs CreateNetwork end-to-end and asserts
the mangle/POSTROUTING rule is present on vpeer with --set-dscp 0x08.
Skips when not running as root (mirrors cmd/smoketest gating).

- nolint:paralleltest with reason: test mutates netns via LockOSThread.

The OSS orchestrator wires tcpfirewall as the egress proxy, which installs
PREROUTING REDIRECT rules that catch every TCP connection from a sandbox
(ports 80, 443, and a catch-all for everything else). Each redirected
connection terminates at a local host proxy, which then opens a fresh
upstream socket via tcpproxy.DialProxy — a host-originated socket that
inherits none of the DSCP marking we applied to the original FC→proxy
hop. The net effect: a customer's L3 firewall sees sandbox TCP traffic
as control-plane traffic.

Set IP_TOS = 32 (CS1 << 2) on the proxy's upstream sockets via the
net.Dialer Control / ControlContext callbacks, restoring the marker on
the wire. UDP, ICMP, and raw IP keep their existing marker via the netns
mangle rule. EE deployments (no tcpfirewall) are unaffected — their TCP
already goes direct via netns SNAT and carries the original mark.

markDSCP previously called only setsockopt(IPPROTO_IP, IP_TOS), which
returns ENOPROTOOPT on AF_INET6 sockets. With Happy Eyeballs in the
hostname path, the dialer can pick an IPv6 socket — the error propagated
out of ControlContext and aborted the dial, breaking IPv6-only destinations.

Set both IP_TOS and IPV6_TCLASS, tolerating ENOPROTOOPT from the non-
matching family. Dual-stack AF_INET6 sockets honor IPV6_TCLASS for both
v4-mapped and native v6 traffic on Linux, so a single fallback covers
all real cases.

Use errors.Join + a single %w wrap so both setsockopt failures are
inspectable by callers via errors.Is / errors.As.

Address @arkamar review feedback:

1. Single source of truth — the previous two constants (sandboxEgressDSCP="8"
for iptables, sandboxEgressTOS=32 for setsockopt) could drift independently.
Replace with one config field network.Config.SandboxEgressDSCP (uint8) plus
the derived TOS byte computed once at Proxy.New() (DSCP << 2). The iptables
rule and the setsockopt path now both read from the same canonical value.

2. Disabled by default — wrap both the netns mangle rule and the tcpfirewall
markDSCP call so deployments that don't opt in stay completely untouched
(no rule, no kernel-module dependency, no socket-option side effects).
   SANDBOX_EGRESS_DSCP env var controls it; valid range 0..63 (DSCP is 6 bits);
0 disables; CS1 (8) is the canonical "Scavenger" class per RFC 3662.

Range is validated in ParseConfig so misconfiguration fails loud at startup
instead of producing a malformed iptables rule.

The package-level var sandboxEgressTOS in tcpfirewall is set once by Proxy.New
from the network.Config. tcpfirewall is a singleton in the orchestrator, so
mutable package state isn't a concern; threading the value through every
handler signature would be a much bigger diff for no real win.

Test updated to set config.SandboxEgressDSCP = 8 explicitly so the existing
end-to-end check still exercises the enabled path.

After switching to t.Context() the context import became unused; golangci-lint typecheck caught it.

@arkamar ready for re-review — both your CHANGES_REQUESTED points addressed in 193b274ed:

1. Single source of truth. The two constants (sandboxEgressDSCP="8" for iptables, sandboxEgressTOS=32 for setsockopt) are gone. One canonical network.Config.SandboxEgressDSCP field; the TOS byte is computed once at tcpfirewall.New() (networkConfig.SandboxEgressDSCP << 2). Both consumers read from the same source — no drift possible.

2. Default-disabled guard. New env var SANDBOX_EGRESS_DSCP (uint8, envDefault:"0", range-validated 0..63 in ParseConfig). When 0:

  • No iptables mangle POSTROUTING rule is added in CreateNetwork.
  • markDSCP returns nil immediately — zero setsockopt calls.
  • No xt_DSCP kernel-module dependency.

The existing test sets config.SandboxEgressDSCP = 8 explicitly so it still exercises the enabled path end-to-end.

The PR title + body have been rewritten to reflect the opt-in shape. Follow-up commit 19d2672a0 removes an unused context import (lint catch after the t.Context() swap).

cfg.Parse() embeds network.Config directly via env.ParseAsWithOptions and
never called network.ParseConfig, so the new range check was bypassed at
real startup — SANDBOX_EGRESS_DSCP=64..255 would survive parsing and only
blow up at first sandbox create when iptables rejects the malformed
--set-dscp value.

Extract the check to Config.Validate() and call it from both entry points
(cfg.Parse for the orchestrator binary, network.ParseConfig for tests).
Misconfig now fails loud at startup.

Reported by codex.

ParseBuilder is used by cmd/create-build and cmd/smoketest; both
currently re-call network.ParseConfig separately, so the gap doesn't
trigger today. Adding the Validate call here closes the class of bug
Codex flagged on cfg.Parse — any code path that parses a struct
containing NetworkConfig now runs the range check before returning.

I would suggest to trim some comments a little bit, they are quite long and they make the code harder to consume, imho. Otherwise, LGTM.

// (top 6 bits of the TOS byte, i.e. DSCP << 2). Set once by Proxy.New() so the
// per-connection markDSCP path doesn't need to thread the value through every
// handler signature. 0 = disabled (no setsockopt), matching the env default.

Not an issue right now, but -race parameter will make the tests flaky if there will be more tests calling tcpfirewll.New() in the future.

Per @arkamar review: parallel tcpfirewall.New() calls under -race would
flag the plain uint8. Atomic.Uint32 has zero runtime cost on the never-
contended path and pre-empts the future flake.
