Summary

Fixes #3154

WrapContextAsUserError previously used errors.Is(err, context.Canceled) which traverses the entire error chain. This caused internal child-context cancellations (e.g., WaitForEnvd 60s timeout calling cancel(errors.New("syncing took too long"))) to be misclassified as user-initiated cancellations, replacing the real error with a misleading "build was cancelled" message.

Changes

builderrors/errors.go

  • WrapContextAsUserError now accepts the build-level context as a parameter
  • Instead of errors.Is(err, context.Canceled), it checks buildCtx.Err() directly
  • Only classifies as user cancellation/timeout when the build context itself is done
  • Internal child-context cancellations now propagate their real error messages

builder.go

  • Updated the call site to pass ctx (the build-level context) to WrapContextAsUserError

builderrors/errors_test.go (new)

  • Added 6 test cases covering:
    • Nil error passthrough
    • Existing user error preserved
    • Internal timeout NOT misclassified (the key regression test)
    • User cancellation correctly classified
    • Build deadline exceeded correctly classified
    • Full WaitForEnvd error chain simulation

Previously, WrapContextAsUserError used errors.Is(err, context.Canceled) to
detect user cancellations. This traverses the entire error chain, matching
context.Canceled from internal child-context cancellations (e.g., WaitForEnvd
60s timeout) — not just user-initiated cancellations.

The fix changes WrapContextAsUserError to accept the build-level context and
check buildCtx.Err() directly. Only when the build context itself is canceled
or timed out will the error be classified as a user error. Internal timeouts
now propagate their real error messages instead of being replaced with the
misleading 'build was cancelled'.

Checking only buildCtx.Err() to wrap context errors can discard unrelated, concrete errors if the build context is canceled or times out. To ensure that only actual context cancellation or timeout errors are wrapped as user errors, the error chain itself should be verified to contain context.Canceled or context.DeadlineExceeded before wrapping, and the corresponding tests should be updated to wrap the context error.

Address review feedback: check both buildCtx.Err() AND errors.Is(err, ...)
to avoid discarding unrelated errors (e.g., disk I/O errors) that happen
to coincide with build context cancellation.
