Pelmet 0.2.9
Pelmet 0.2.9
Fixed:
- Dragging in the layout editor is steady now. Each section is one drop
target with a single placeholder that follows the pointer, so tiles no
longer twitch as you cross them, and the drop lands where the
placeholder was. Releasing outside a section puts the tile back. - The overflow chevron is found on non-English systems. Pelmet matched it
by its English accessibility label, so on any other system language the
boundary walk and editor placement quietly did nothing. It now reads
every translation from macOS itself.
Changed:
- Settings screenshots and docs refreshed for the 0.2.8 layout.
Pelmet 0.2.8
Pelmet 0.2.8
New:
- Pick the menu bar icon. Settings › General offers six glyphs
(chevron, arrow, eye, dots, grid, panel). Clicking one changes the
icon right away. The chevron stays the default. - The delay sliders snap to ticks. Hover delay runs 0.1 to 0.5 s in
0.1 s steps, and the shortest setting really is 0.1 s now. Auto-rehide
runs 0 to 5 s in half-second steps.
Changed:
- Settings › General is tidier: the "without the icon" hint sits in its
own box, and Language has its own section.
Pelmet 0.2.7
Pelmet 0.2.7
New:
- Updates are quiet now. When a new version is found, Pelmet posts a
notification instead of opening a window over your work, puts a small
dot on its menu bar icon, adds an "Update to…" line to every
right-click menu, and marks About in Settings. About has two switches:
download updates automatically, and notify when one is available. - Settings › General shows the Accessibility permission with a Grant
access button. If macOS drops the permission after an update, Pelmet
says so on its icon and in its menus, and asks for it back in one step
instead of replaying the intro. - Settings has a Behavior tab for reveal, rehide, system extras and
Notification Center. Sidebar rows are taller. About links to the
website, GitHub and the issue tracker.
Fixed:
- The Pelmet icon stays at the boundary between hidden and visible
icons. Switching it on used to drop it inside the hidden group, where
every reveal shuffled it around. - Clicking the Pelmet icon or the empty bar to hide the icons now sticks
while the pointer is still in the bar. It used to reopen on hover
right away. - A thin line could show under the hidden icons during reveals on
notched Macs. Gone. - Auto-rehide waits for Pelmet's own icon moves to finish.
Pelmet 0.2.6
Pelmet 0.2.6
Fixed:
- Dragging the first icon of the Hidden section into Always Hidden with
⌘ held now sticks. It moved in the bar but the editor never followed,
so the next reveal put it back. - A ⌘-drag no longer nudges the icons it lands next to into the wrong
section. - Double-clicking the empty bar to see everything is smooth. The first
click of the double used to collapse the bar right before the second
click reopened it, and the Always Hidden icons slid in uncovered.
Clicking a revealed bar once still hides it, after a short pause so a
double-click can be told apart.
Pelmet 0.2.5
Pelmet 0.2.5
New:
- Clicking the clock opens Notification Center again, even while icons are
hidden. macOS refuses that click whenever anything is hidden, so Pelmet
shows everything for the blink it takes the click to land, then hides
again. You'll see the hidden icons flash for about half a second. Turn it
off in Settings › Menu Bar › Notification Center if you prefer the
two-finger swipe from the right edge of the trackpad, which always works.
Pelmet 0.2.4
Pelmet 0.2.4
New:
- Pelmet now speaks ten languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian,
Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Korean and Russian. It
follows your system language, or pick one in Settings › General › Language.
Translations are machine-drafted for now. Corrections are welcome in
scripts/gen-xcstrings.py.
Fixes:
- Hovering out of the menu bar hides the icons again. Two always-on system
and utility windows near the top of the screen were being mistaken for an
open menu, which kept the bar revealed until you clicked somewhere else. - The bar now stays revealed only while the Menu Bar tab of Settings is open.
On the other tabs, and with Settings closed, auto-rehide behaves normally. - ⌘-dragging an icon in the menu bar reliably updates its order in the layout
editor, including on multi-display setups. - Pelmet's own items (media controls, separators) land in their assigned slot
after a relaunch instead of wherever macOS parked them. - The editor names Pelmet's own tiles Media, Camera and AirDrop instead of
"Pelmet". - The Settings window opens taller, and long sidebar labels no longer wrap.
Pelmet 0.2.3
Pelmet 0.2.3
New here? Pelmet is a free, open source menu bar manager built for macOS 27's rebuilt menu bar. It hides the icons you don't need until you do. Hover, click or a shortcut brings them back. Three sections (Visible, Hidden, Always Hidden), a layout editor, ⌘-drag right in the bar, per-display rules. No account, no analytics, no server.

Install: download Pelmet-0.2.3.dmg below, drag to Applications, launch. Or brew install fif7y/tap/pelmet. Requires macOS 27. Grants one permission on first launch (Accessibility).
Fixes in 0.2.3
- Reordering icons by ⌘-dragging them in the menu bar now syncs into the
layout editor even when "Show Pelmet icon in the menu bar" is turned off.
Previously the editor kept the old order until you reordered there too.
Pelmet 0.2.2
Pelmet 0.2.2
New brand mark:
- New app icon — the P with its trailing dots, everywhere the icon shows
(Dock, Spotlight, System Settings, Finder). - The About tab now draws the mark natively and gives it a touch of motion:
the ghost dots briefly tuck into the P and re-expand, on the same cycle
as the README hero. Respects Reduce Motion.
Pelmet 0.2.1
Pelmet 0.2.1
Fixes:
-
Rapid hover out-and-in could leave the bar shut under a hovering pointer
until it left and re-entered — the hover reveal now re-arms when a conceal
lands with the pointer already back in the band. -
Smooth hide/reveal fades were silently disabled without Screen Recording
access (the rename dropped the old grant, and the app never asked). Pelmet
now asks once, the first time a fade actually needs it. Granting takes
effect after a relaunch — and it stays optional: without it, icons appear
and disappear without the fade. -
Exits start instantly: the hide cover is now pre-captured while the bar
sits revealed (mirroring the reveal side), instead of paying an ~70ms
screen capture before every conceal could begin.
Smooths the Nook → Pelmet update for existing users:
- The app now renames its own bundle from Nook.app to Pelmet.app on first
launch, before asking for any permission — updating in place no longer
leaves a mis-named app, and the Accessibility grant attaches cleanly. - Onboarding now warns updaters about the leftover "Nook" row in System
Settings → Accessibility: it belongs to the old identity and no longer
works. Remove it with −, then grant the new Pelmet entry. - The Accessibility prompt re-fires for migrated installs so the correct
Pelmet row is always registered.
If you already updated to 0.2.0 and Pelmet isn't hiding anything: remove the
old Nook row from System Settings → Accessibility, grant the Pelmet entry,
and relaunch the app.
Pelmet 0.2.0
Pelmet 0.2.0
Nook is now Pelmet. A pelmet is the board above a window that hides the
curtain hardware — this one does it for your menu bar. Same app, same author,
new name (the old one collided with Barnes & Noble's NOOK and other Mac apps).
What happens on update:
- All your settings migrate automatically — sections, icon order, separators,
reveal behavior, per-display settings. Your old settings stay on disk, so
downgrading to 0.1.x still works. - You'll be asked to re-grant Accessibility (and Screen Recording, if you
had it enabled). The app's identity changed, and macOS ties permissions to
it. One-time. - Launch at login is re-registered under the new identity. If a stale "Nook"
entry lingers in System Settings → General → Login Items, it's safe to
remove. - If you updated in place (rather than a fresh DMG install), the app file in
/Applications may still be named Nook.app — rename it to Pelmet.app if you
like; everything works either way. - Homebrew users: the cask is now
fif7y/tap/pelmet.
If Pelmet is not hiding anything after this update: the leftover "Nook" row in System Settings → Accessibility belongs to the old app identity and no longer works. Remove it with −, click Grant Accessibility Access in Pelmet, enable the new Pelmet row, and relaunch. (0.2.1 automates most of this.)
