The Guilty

Alliance Origin

  • The Clerk's jealousy of Violet slides into surveillance and stalking to confirm his suspicion that she is undeservedly credited. Through this he discovers her weakness via an innocent statement made by the Witness during an interview for Violet's security clearance.

  • The Witness's statement starts as truthful. He only begins lying after the Coroner points out that his report started the investigation. The moment is flimsy: they have been drinking, and the Witness is already destabilized by a breakup that turned out to have only been a hookup.

  • The Coroner approaches the Witness after the Clerk tells him how he obtained the information — it is fruit from the poisoned tree, tainted at the source via the Clerk's stalking. Around this point the Coroner's condition is starting to show in his work. He is overthinking everything, exacerbating his fear of losing.

The Coroner's downward spiral — fear of losing, overthinking, condition worsening — is the beat the episodes follow structurally. The overall plot is framed as thriller and mystery noir.

Individual Motivations

  • The Coroner: fear of losing control; neurological condition accelerating; reframes his violence as inevitable to avoid facing what he is becoming.

  • The Witness: initially innocent; trapped by his own statement; lies to protect himself from the implication that he caused everything.

  • The Clerk: jealousy dressed as institutional grievance; believes Violet's results are his uncredited labor; his surveillance was the original sin that gave the Coroner his opening.

  • The Undertaker: loyal to belonging; does not share the Coroner's ideology; would stop if he believed he could leave.

  • The Police Liaison subplot: the Clerk is the liaison's sibling or former academy partner. The loyalty-versus-ethics dilemma resolves when the liaison finds evidence they cannot spin and turns on the Clerk.
