The public jgraph repositories that matter to developers working with draw.io, what each contains, and whether it is maintained. Status and dates were checked in October 2026. Open the repository to see its current state before you rely on it.

This repository, jgraph/drawio, is the editor itself: the web app, the viewer and the Java servlets. Several JavaScript bundles in it (Mermaid, PlantUML, Gliffy and Visio conversion, layout and routing) are built outside this repository and committed as minified files.

Applications and deployment

Repository What it is Status
jgraph/drawio-desktop The Electron desktop app. It includes this repository as the git submodule drawio and runs the editor offline. It also provides the command-line exporter. Binaries are on its releases page. Active. Releases carry the draw.io version they were built from, but not every draw.io release gets one. GPL-3.0. See Desktop app.
jgraph/docker-drawio The jgraph/drawio Docker image: Tomcat serving the WAR built from this repository. It is configured with DRAWIO_* environment variables for the server URL, editor configuration, Google Drive, OneDrive and GitLab. Also contains a Docker Compose file and a Nextcloud example. Active, tags follow draw.io releases. GPL-3.0. See Self-hosting.

Integrations and examples

Repository What it is Status
jgraph/drawio-integration Examples of embed mode, where your application stores the diagram and draw.io edits it in an iframe driven by postMessage. Under examples/ are a minimal editor, inline editing, local storage and WebDAV examples, and a browser-extension template. Live demos are on GitHub Pages. Maintained (last change February 2026). No licence file. See Embedding.
jgraph/drawio-github Examples for diagrams in GitHub repositories: an editor page that uses the GitHub Contents API, and self-editing SVG and HTML files. Also documents dark-mode SVGs in GitHub Markdown. Maintained (last change February 2026). No licence file.
jgraph/drawio-mcp The official draw.io Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, so that LLM-based tools can create diagrams and open them in draw.io. It has four variants: a hosted MCP App server (create_diagram, search_shapes), the @drawio/mcp npm tool server, plugins for coding assistants (which export through the desktop command line), and plain project instructions. One shared XML reference describes the draw.io format for all of them. Active. Apache-2.0.
jgraph/drawio-google-docs Apps Script source of add-ons for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, with instructions to install them as a private deployment Not updated since March 2024. Apache-2.0.
jgraph/drawio-data-driven A Java servlet example that creates or updates diagrams on the server, for use with the update plugin (p=update, plugins/update.js) Not updated since 2018. No licence file.

Content and shape libraries

Repository What it is Status
jgraph/drawio-diagrams Example diagrams, templates and the diagrams used in the draw.io blog and training material, including sample .vsdx and Gliffy files. Files can be opened directly with a #U URL, see Storage backends. Active. Apache-2.0.
jgraph/drawio-libs Custom shape libraries (<mxlibrary> files) that load with the clibs URL parameter, for example icon sets. The README documents the library file format, and tools/ has Python scripts to build and validate libraries. The default branch is review; GitHub Pages serves main. Active. Apache-2.0. See Shapes and stencils.

Tools

Repository What it is Status
jgraph/drawio-tools Browser utilities hosted at jgraph.github.io/drawio-tools. Useful when working on files: compress and decompress diagram XML (Text Tools), validate and repair mxfiles (MxFile Tools), Base64 images, a diagram viewer, a CSV import tool, and a custom-link editor. Maintained. The README states Apache-2.0, but the repository has no licence file. See File format.
jgraph/svg2xml A Java Swing tool that converts SVG files to mxGraph stencil XML. Its README describes it as an internal, unfinished tool. Not updated since 2021. Apache-2.0. See Shapes and stencils.

Forks, retired and archived repositories

Repository What it is Status
jgraph/mxgraph The standalone mxGraph JavaScript library, final release 4.2.2 Archived. Its README announces the end of development in November 2020 and lists community forks.
jgraph/mxgraph-js The JavaScript part of mxGraph as a separate repository Archived
jgraph/mermaid A fork of mermaid-js/mermaid with draw.io conversion hooks, used by earlier draw.io versions Last updated May 2026. Current draw.io builds load their Mermaid converter from js/mermaid/drawio-mermaid.min.js instead. MIT.
jgraph/draw-image-export2 A Node, Puppeteer and headless Chrome export service for PNG and PDF that renders export3.html Archived. See Import and export.
jgraph/drawio-docs An early documentation site with a few pages and no README Not updated since 2022. The documentation is at www.drawio.com/docs.
jgraph/drawio-i18n The former translations submodule Archived. Translations are now regular files in src/main/webapp/resources/, see Internationalization.
jgraph/drawio-nextcloud A former Nextcloud integration Archived. Its README points to the community project arnowelzel/drawio-nextcloud.

draw.io and mxGraph

draw.io is built on mxGraph, but it does not use the archived jgraph/mxgraph repository. It carries its own copy in src/main/webapp/mxgraph/: the sources in mxgraph/src/ and the concatenated mxgraph/mxClient.js. This copy has been maintained and changed along with draw.io since the standalone library ended, so it differs from mxGraph 4.2.2.

  • Always read the code in this repository, not jgraph/mxgraph.
  • The mxGraph API documentation and examples on jgraph.github.io/mxgraph describe the 2020 library. They help with the concepts, but not every signature still matches.

The Graph model and Architecture pages describe the copy in this repository.
