Quick Start

Quick start

This path takes you from an empty server to a Moblin feed in OBS.

Before you begin

You need three devices in the same Tailscale Tailnet:

Role Device Software
Server macOS, Debian or Ubuntu Tailscale + Tailnet IRL Server
Sender iPhone Tailscale + Moblin
Receiver PC or Mac Tailscale + OBS Studio

The server needs outbound HTTPS during installation to download MediaMTX and verify its checksum. It does not need an inbound public port.

1. Install the server

macOS

git clone https://github.com/nikpottbecker/tailnet-irl-server.git
cd tailnet-irl-server
./install-macos.sh
./selftest-macos.sh

Debian / Ubuntu / Proxmox LXC

git clone https://github.com/nikpottbecker/tailnet-irl-server.git
cd tailnet-irl-server
sudo ./install.sh
sudo ./selftest.sh

The installer prints a private address similar to:

http://100.x.y.z:8090

Do not substitute the LAN address. The listeners intentionally use the Tailscale address.

2. Check the server

macOS:

"$HOME/Library/Application Support/IRL Server/app/irl-serverctl" status

Linux:

irl-serverctl status

Expected essentials:

MediaMTX: aktiv
Dashboard: aktiv
Stream: wartet auf Stream

wartet auf Stream is healthy: the server is ready, but Moblin is not publishing yet.

3. Connect Moblin

  1. Connect the iPhone to Tailscale.
  2. Open the dashboard address in Safari.
  3. Tap In Moblin öffnen.
  4. Approve the imported stream configuration.
  5. Select IRL Server (Tailscale) in Moblin.
  6. Start the stream.

The dashboard should change to LIVE within a few seconds.

4. Connect OBS

  1. Connect the OBS computer to Tailscale.
  2. Open the private dashboard.
  3. Select OBS-Link kopieren.
  4. In OBS, add a Media Source.
  5. Disable Local File.
  6. Paste the URL into Input.
  7. Set Input Format to mpegts.
  8. Enable Restart playback when source becomes active.

5. Confirm the complete path

  • Dashboard badge: LIVE
  • Feed state: aktiv
  • Data rate: greater than 0.00 Mbit/s
  • Tracks: H.264 and MPEG-4 Audio/AAC
  • OBS: moving video and audible sound
