The Subutai Snap is essentially the packaging for the Subutai P2P OS minus the Management Container. It needed to create a Peer Resource Host. It contains the services needed to amalgamate resources from physical or virtual machines into a single Subutai Peer.
Snappy or snapd as it is now called was used as the packaging for Subutai. Why? Well first of all it provides a sandbox for containers other people own and prevents them from escaping this sandbox. Secondly it is a transactional package manager. Peers cannot afford to be compromised due to an upgrade failure where they fail to upgrade yet enter an inconsistent state.
