What's new

• Menu tidy-up. Settings now sits below the separator, next to Quit, instead of in the middle of the actions.
• If you're already on 0.2.4, this is the first update that installs itself — Hosts Switchr downloads, replaces itself, and relaunches, no dragging required.

Hosts Switchr 0.2.3

Smarter change tracking, a Cancel button, and a clearer fragment editor.

New

• The "needs apply" badge is now accurate. Hosts Switchr compares your profile against what's actually live in /etc/hosts — add a line and delete it again, toggle a source or fragment on and back off, or undo a fragment edit, and the badge clears instead of nagging you to re-apply. This survives app restarts, and refreshing a blocklist that hasn't actually changed no longer flags your profile.
• Cancel button. When the active profile has un-applied changes, Cancel restores the text and the source/fragment toggles to exactly what's applied.
• Clearer fragment editing. The fragment editor now has explicit Save (commits to your library — never asks for a password) and Cancel (discards the draft) buttons, plus Re-apply Profile when a saved change still needs publishing — one password prompt picks up all pending changes at once. Fragments that need re-applying show a ↻ badge in the sidebar.
• Softer indicators. "Out of date" is now a quiet ↻ refresh glyph in the sidebar and menu bar; warning triangles are reserved for real problems (fetch failures, invalid hosts lines).

Improved

• The profile editor's hosts text fills the window, and the Fragments/Sources dropdowns stay pinned next to Apply — open lists grow to use the free space and scroll only when they run out.
• Toggle rows dim their label when off, so what's enabled is visible at a glance.
• Drag-to-reorder no longer offers a pointless drag when there's only one movable item.

Drag-to-reorder everywhere: arrange your Fragments, Profiles, and Sources lists the way you want.

• Drag-to-reorder in all three sidebars. Grab a fragment, profile, or source and drag it up or down — Finder-style, no Edit mode. The order is purely for organizing your lists: what gets written to /etc/hosts is still controlled per profile.
• System Default stays pinned at the top of the Profiles list — it can't be dragged, and nothing can be dropped above it.
• Built-in sources keep their canonical order; only the sources you've added yourself can be reordered.

Fixes

• Update prompt now tells you to quit before dragging. The "Update downloaded" message previously said to drag the new app into Applications and then quit — but dragging over the still-running app makes macOS report "the item 'Hosts Switchr' is in use." The prompt now guides you to quit → drag → reopen, and its Quit Now button lets you quit right from the dialog before you drag.

Hosts Switchr 0.2.0

Adds an in-app update checker so the app can tell you when a new version is out and fetch it for you.

• Update checker. Hosts Switchr now checks GitHub Releases for a newer version and, when one exists, downloads the .dmg and opens it for you to drag into Applications.
  • A new "Check for Updates…" item in the menu-bar menu (above Quit). When an update is available it becomes "Update to vX.Y.Z…".
  • A "Automatically check for updates on launch" toggle in Settings (on by default). The automatic check runs ~10 minutes after launch so it never collides with the source refresh.
  • Downloads are https-only and size-checked; the app only mounts the disk image — it never runs it. In keeping with the unsigned design there's no signature/notarization step.

Point release that fixes the admin-password prompt firing on every keystroke while editing a fragment.

Fixes

• No more admin-password prompt on every character typed in a fragment. Editing a fragment that belonged to the active profile used to re-apply /etc/hosts after every debounced save — so the authorization prompt reappeared every few keystrokes, making fragment editing unusable. Fragment editing now just saves and marks the active profile out of date, exactly like editing a profile's own content.
• New Apply button in the fragment editor. It re-applies the active profile (with the fragment's changes) on demand, and stays disabled until there's actually something to apply — mirroring the profile editor. /etc/hosts is still only ever touched when you click Apply.

The launch-time source refresh now respects your configured refresh interval instead of running on every launch, and waits 5 minutes after boot before its first run — so a blocklist auto-reapply can't prompt for your password the moment you turn on your Mac. With a weekly interval, that's at most one refresh (one possible prompt) per week, never mid-boot.
• Scheduler reworked to a single interval-anchored timer: a not-yet-due launch no longer defers the next refresh by up to ~2× the interval, and changing the interval (or turning refresh Off) can no longer let a stale refresh fire.
• An all-offline refresh no longer throttles the next attempt for a full interval.
