Plugins News Feed
The News Feed plugin (mado-news) is a community plugin for Mado that aggregates RSS and Atom feeds into a single scrollable list in the sidebar. Articles open directly in the Mado browser panel with a single keypress.

mado plugin install newsThis downloads the binary, registers the plugin in ~/.config/mado/plugins/news.toml, and signs it for macOS. Restart Mado to activate the panel.

Feeds are defined in ~/.config/mado/plugins/news.toml. The file is created automatically on first install with a few default feeds:
[[feeds]]
url = "https://nerimasoft.co.uk/feed.xml"
[[feeds]]
url = "https://news.ycombinator.com/rss"
[[feeds]]
url = "https://www.theverge.com/rss/index.xml"Add or remove [[feeds]] blocks to customise your sources. The plugin reads this file at startup — restart Mado after editing it for changes to take effect.
Most blogs, news sites, and podcasts publish an RSS or Atom feed. Common URL patterns:
| Site type | Typical feed URL |
|---|---|
| WordPress |
/feed or /rss
|
| Ghost | /rss |
| Substack | /feed |
| YouTube channel | https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=… |
| Reddit subreddit | https://www.reddit.com/r/…/.rss |
| GitHub releases | https://github.com/owner/repo/releases.atom |
Browsers often show a feed icon (📶) in the address bar when a feed is detected. Browser extensions like Feedbro can also discover feeds on any page.
mado plugin update newsThis fetches the latest GitHub release, replaces the binary, and re-signs it. Restart Mado after updating.
mado plugin remove newsThis unregisters the plugin and deletes the binary. The news.toml config file is left intact so you can reinstall without losing your feed list.
The panel is blank when I first open it.
The plugin fetches feeds on startup — if your network is slow it may take a moment. Press r to manually trigger a refresh.
An article opens but the page is broken or doesn't load. Some sites block feeds or have paywalls. The browser panel loads the full page URL from the article — the same restrictions that apply in any browser apply here.
I added a feed but it doesn't show.
Config is read at startup. Restart Mado after editing news.toml.
How many feeds can I add? There is no hard limit. Fetching many feeds slows the initial load — 10–20 is a reasonable number for fast startup.
Articles from one feed aren't showing up. Check that the URL is a valid RSS or Atom feed (open it in a browser — it should show XML). Some feeds use redirects; follow the final URL and use that directly.
