Connect an AI assistant
The editor can run as an MCP server. An AI assistant that supports MCP, such as Claude Desktop or Claude Code, can then look at your heroes and change them for you: "give my hero the Melee damage kit and equip it", "make my sword best for damage", "set my emeralds to 5,000".
Menu → Connect an AI (MCP)… in the editor shows the exact setup for your PC, with Copy buttons. In short:
-
Open Settings → Developer → Edit Config.
-
Add this, with the path to your own copy of the editor:
{ "mcpServers": { "mcd2-save-editor": { "command": "C:\\path\\to\\MCD2SaveEditor\\MCD2SaveEditor.exe", "args": ["mcp"] } } } -
Save, and restart Claude Desktop.
claude mcp add mcd2-save-editor -- "C:\path\to\MCD2SaveEditor\MCD2SaveEditor.exe" mcp
If you run the editor from its source (on Linux or a Mac, say), the server is python -m dungeons2_editor mcp.
- List your heroes, and show a hero's stats, gear and inventory
- Search every item in the game
- Set stats
- Add, change, equip, copy and delete items
- Give an item effects and an enchantment, or ask for the editor's own picks for a goal (the same Best for as in the effects window)
- Set a talisman's level, or get a companion's talisman ready to level up
- Add enchantment books: one, or every one your hero is without
- Apply presets and kits
- List the story's quests, finish one, a group of them or all of them, start one over, add one or track one, and set the minecart station the hero starts at
- Discover the whole map, and open the overworld's shortcuts and key gates
- Say where and when the next Soul Storms are
- Nothing is written until it saves. The assistant's changes collect in a draft, like unsaved changes in the editor's window. Only its save_changes tool writes them, and that needs the game to be closed and backs up your saves first, exactly like Save to game.
- It plays by Simple mode's rules: offline heroes only, the game's caps, gear slots that open with your level, and best-guess item IDs only if it asks for them.
- It never sees your sign-in, account or device data. The editor doesn't read those files at all.
- Menu → Restore a backup… undoes a save, whoever made it.
