Running from source
The download is a Windows .exe built from the source. You can run the source itself instead, on Windows, on Linux or on a Mac. It's the same editor.
- Install Python 3.10 or newer. Its standard installer includes the Tkinter the editor uses.
- Download the source: on the project page, Code → Download ZIP, and unzip it.
- Double-click Start Save Editor.bat.
Run that way, backups, pictures and settings stay in the unzipped folder.
For smoother item pictures, install Pillow too. The .exe includes it.
py -m pip install pillow
See Linux and Mac: Start Save Editor.sh on Linux, Start Save Editor.command on a Mac.
The editor finds your saves by itself. If it doesn't, use Menu → Open a save folder…, or start it with --profile <folder>: the Xbox folder with containers.index in it, or the Steam SaveGames folder.
The source also runs without its window: python -m dungeons2_editor list, backup, restore, items, ids, record and more. The README has the whole list.
To let an AI assistant use it, the server is python -m dungeons2_editor mcp. See Connect an AI assistant.
