Linux and Mac
The download is a Windows program. On Linux and on a Mac the editor runs from its source, which needs Python 3.10 or newer with Tkinter. Only the Steam version of the game runs on these systems.
- Download the source: on the project page, Code → Download ZIP, and unzip it.
- Install Tkinter if your Python doesn't have it. On Debian or Ubuntu:
sudo apt install python3-tk - Run Start Save Editor.sh.
The editor looks for your saves inside the game's Proton prefix:
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1912410/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Dungeons2/Saved/SaveGames
It also looks in Flatpak and Snap Steam's folders, in other Steam library drives, and in a plain Wine prefix (~/.wine).
On a Mac the game runs through a Windows layer. The editor looks for the same SaveGames folder in CrossOver's and Whisky's bottles and in a plain Wine prefix.
- Install Python from python.org. Its installer includes Tkinter.
- Download the source as above.
- Double-click Start Save Editor.command. The first time, right-click it and choose Open.
This is new, and nobody has yet tried it on a real Mac. Try a small change first and say how it went.
Use Menu → Open a save folder… and pick the SaveGames folder yourself, or start the editor with --profile <folder>. Hero saves are the Character<id>.sav files.
If your Steam saves are the Unreal Engine binary kind (they start with GVAS) instead of JSON, they show up as read-only.
Close the game and let Steam finish syncing, the same as on Windows.
