LaTeX equation references
Available in 2.15.4. Thanks to Innovaspire for the original contribution in PR #2.
$$
E=mc^2 \label{eq:energy}
$$
$$
\eqref{eq:energy}
$$\eqref displays the number in parentheses; \ref displays the number without parentheses. Use \eqref{Chapter One#^eq:energy} across notes. In prose, [[Chapter One#^eq:energy]] uses the configured equation reference format. The plugin resolves LaTeX labels; a label containing : is not an Obsidian native block ID. For portable links that work with the plugin disabled, use a real ^block-id on the equation. Generated indexes use real native anchors or fall back to a heading/note link.
References are clickable in Reading view and Live Preview. HTML/PDF exports preserve internal links when the target note is included. A row reference opens its equation block, not an exact row position. Exported books apply their selected numbering mode.
$$
\begin{align*}
a &= b \label{eq:first} \\
c &= d \label{eq:second} \\
e &= f \notag \label{eq:quiet}
\end{align*}

$$A top-level row label opts supported alignment/gather environments into row numbering. Multiple labels on one row share a number. The same label on different targets is ambiguous; labels can be reused across files with file-qualified references.
| Equation numbering setting | Row behavior |
|---|---|
| All | Number every eligible mathematical row, including unlabelled rows. |
| Referenced only | Number only rows referenced through one of their labels. |
| Off | Do not assign automatic row numbers. |
\tag{A} explicitly supplies a number. \notag / \nonumber suppress automatic numbering on their row. Merely declaring a label does not override these settings. Referencing an unnumbered equation shows an unnumbered placeholder and is reported by Check academic references; missing targets display ??. Declaring an unused label on a suppressed row does not produce a warning.
Notes without row labels retain block-level numbering. split and multline represent one equation over multiple lines and retain a single number. Nested alignment labels and unsupported environments do not opt into top-level row numbering. Comments do not introduce labels, tags or row breaks.
Use Insert theorem, equation or figure reference or the reference suggestions. Inside $...$ or $$...$$, insertion uses \eqref for equations and \ref for other targets; prose uses wikilinks. Row labels are separate selectable targets. Selecting an unlabelled block creates a native block ID only for that target, with the existing unsaved-edit protections.
Version 2.15.5 supports inline $...$ LaTeX references. Define targets in display equations or with native block IDs. Native Obsidian navigation without the plugin cannot resolve synthetic LaTeX labels. PDF printing remains desktop-only; the references and HTML export work on mobile.
Write By $\eqref{eq:energy}$, the conclusion follows. Inline references participate in referenced-only equation numbering and retain cross-file HTML/PDF links. Reading view and inactive Live Preview resolve them; active editing keeps the source command.
