The vault

English | Nederlands

By default everything lives in a Workspace folder in your home folder, with two halves: Knowledge for the knowledge and Drive for the files. They share the same layout.

The vault template is in Dutch for now, so the folders have Dutch names. The translation is in the right-hand column.

  • Klanten (clients) is for work for someone else: Klanten/<Client>/<Project>/. Projecten (projects) is for your own work and topics. You can use one of them or both.

Why PascalCase

Client and project folders are named in PascalCase: words joined together, each with a capital, no spaces (BakkerijDeGoudenKorst). Without spaces you complete a name with the Tab key, in the terminal and in Obsidian, without quotes. The capitals keep the words readable, and the name does not break in links, in cloud folders or on another operating system. The proper name with spaces is the title inside the note itself.

Why a separate Drive

The vault is plain text. That keeps it small and quick to search for your AI assistant, and easy to back up. PDFs, Word files, photos and exports slow searching down, fill up a GitHub backup quickly, and the assistant cannot read them from a note anyway. So they live in Drive, in the same place in the layout as the note about them.

The exception is images you want to see in a note, such as a screenshot you paste in. They belong to the note and live in _Bijlagen in the vault. In Obsidian you set this under Settings, Files and links, "Default location for new attachments": the folder _Bijlagen.

The instruction file

/kennis-intro also adds a short block to your program's instruction file: the file it reads at the start of every conversation. It holds the path to your vault, a few rules and the signposts to your running projects. A copy of your existing file is made first.

Program Instruction file
Claude Code ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md
Codex ~/.codex/AGENTS.md
Gemini CLI ~/.gemini/GEMINI.md
ChatGPT desktop ~/.kennisbasis/chatgpt.md, which the skills read themselves

Kennisbasis remembers where everything is in ~/.kennisbasis/instellingen.txt. If you use several programs, each program is listed there with its own instruction file, and they share the same vault.
