FlatOut 2 VR 1.6
New (off by default)
- The cockpit's steering wheel turns as your own wheel. The game turns the cockpit's wheel with the car's steering: 90 degrees only at your wheel's full lock (450 degrees on a 900-degree wheel), lagging behind and turning less at speed. Set
WheelRange=inscripts\FO2VR.ini([VR]) to your wheel's range from lock to lock, as set in its software (e.g.WheelRange=900, Logitech's Operating Range), and the cockpit's wheel and the driver's hands turn as far and as fast as yours, up to the cockpit wheel's lock at 90 degrees either way, where the driver's arm animation ends. A smaller number turns it less than yours. Only the picture changes: the car steers as before. - With
GrabWheel=1the cockpit's wheel held in your hands now turns exactly as your hands also on the move (it turned less at speed).
Install: extract the zip into the game folder (where FlatOut2.exe is), pick the runtime in scripts\FO2VR.ini (steamvr by default; Virtual Desktop users: the VDXR path given in the ini), start the runtime, then the game. Works with the GOG and the Steam release. See the README for settings and controls.
Updating from 1.5.1: replace scripts\FO2VR.asi (and scripts\FO2VR-README.md). Your FO2VR.ini can stay; with a steering wheel add WheelRange=900 (your wheel's range) under [VR] (the new ini in the zip has it, with its description). From 1.5 or earlier, see the notes of 1.5.1 and 1.5.
Contains the mod (scripts\), Ultimate ASI Loader 9.7.4 (winmm.dll) and DXVK 3.1 (d3d9.dll, 32-bit), with their licenses (the same as in 1.5.1).
FlatOut 2 VR 1.5.1
New (off by default)
- A pause button for the right hand. The VR controllers' menu button is on the left controller, under the thumb that steers.
PauseButton=inscripts\FO2VR.ini([VR]) picks another button that pauses the race and continues it:RightStick(the right thumbstick pressed),RightGrip,LeftStick,LeftGrip,XorY. That button then only pauses (the game no longer sees it), so withRightStickmove Look back to the left thumbstick pressed in the game's Options > Controller options > Configure controls. Both thumbsticks pressed still recenter the view. In the pause menu the right thumbstick moves, A selects and B goes back. The game's Configure controls has no Pause of its own on PC, which is why this is an ini setting.
Updating from 1.5: replace scripts\FO2VR.asi (and scripts\FO2VR-README.md). Your FO2VR.ini can stay; to use the new setting, add PauseButton=RightStick (or another of the buttons above) under [VR] (the new ini in the zip has it, with its description). From 1.4 or earlier, see the notes of 1.5 and 1.4.
Contains the mod (scripts\), Ultimate ASI Loader 9.7.4 (winmm.dll) and DXVK 3.1 (d3d9.dll, 32-bit), with their licenses (the same as in 1.5).
FlatOut 2 VR 1.5
Fixed
- No sound until the game's window was clicked when the game was started from the headset (or another window was in front): in VR the game's sound now plays whichever window has the focus.
New (both off by default)
- The engine's vibration.
EngineRumble=inscripts\FO2VR.ini([VR]) makes the engine a light, steady vibration of the VR controllers (an Xbox controller's light motor) while driving, stronger with the revs and the throttle: 0.2-0.5 gives a hum under the crashes' vibration. It needs Force feedback On in the game's Options > Controller options, like the crashes' vibration. - Experimental: the steering wheel in your hands. With
GrabWheel=1squeeze a grip with your hand at the cockpit's steering wheel to take hold of it and turn it with your hands (one or both); let go and it comes back to the middle, and the thumbstick steers again. 90 degrees is full lock, as the cockpit's wheel turns (WheelTurn=). The grips then hold the wheel instead of shifting gears. Holding your hands up tires them quickly, so it stays off by default.
Updating from 1.4: replace scripts\FO2VR.asi (and scripts\FO2VR-README.md). Your FO2VR.ini can stay: the sound fix needs no setting, and the new settings are off without it; to try them, add EngineRumble=0.3 or GrabWheel=1 under [VR] (the new ini in the zip has them, with their descriptions). From 1.3.1 or earlier, see the notes of 1.4 and 1.3.
Contains the mod (scripts\), Ultimate ASI Loader 9.7.4 (winmm.dll) and DXVK 3.1 (d3d9.dll, 32-bit), with their licenses (the same as in 1.4).
FlatOut 2 VR 1.4
New
- Drive with the VR controllers. "VR controllers" appears among the game's controllers: choose it in the game's Options > Controller options > Controller. The left thumbstick steers, the right trigger accelerates and the left one brakes, A nitro, B handbrake, X camera, Y reset, the menu button pauses, the grips shift gears (manual), the right thumbstick pressed looks back; both thumbsticks pressed recenter the view (as F8). The game's Configure controls changes them. Touch controllers (and other headsets' controllers through Virtual Desktop), Index and Windows Mixed Reality controllers.
- The menus with the VR controllers and Xbox controllers. The game's menus take only the keyboard, and its game controllers cannot pause a race. Now the thumbsticks (and an Xbox controller's D-pad) move, A selects, B goes back, and the menu button or Start pauses a race: the whole game can be played without a keyboard.
- Vibration. With Force feedback on in the game's options, crashes and hard knocks vibrate the VR controllers, and Xbox controllers too (the game has no vibration for those otherwise).
Rumble=inscripts\FO2VR.inisets how strongly (0 = none, up to 2).
Fixed
- A gamepad did nothing until the game's window was clicked when the game was started from the headset (or another window was in front): in VR the game now reads its game controllers whether or not its window on the monitor has the focus, and puts its window in front as it starts.
Updating from 1.3.1: replace scripts\FO2VR.asi (and scripts\FO2VR-README.md). The new settings are on by default, so your FO2VR.ini can stay; to change them, add MotionControllers=1 and Rumble=1 under [VR] (the new ini in the zip has them, with their descriptions). From 1.2 or earlier, see the notes of 1.3 (the game restarts once at the first start, to use 4 GB of memory).
Contains the mod (scripts\), Ultimate ASI Loader 9.7.4 (winmm.dll) and DXVK 3.1 (d3d9.dll, 32-bit), with their licenses (the same as in 1.3.1).
FlatOut 2 VR 1.3.1
Fixed
- A headset frame lost every 2 seconds (a short judder), since 1.3: the mod's note of the game's memory use for its log walked the game's whole address space on the render thread. Now it costs nothing.
- Steam release: the derby's triangles over the rivals now show over their cars. Before, they stayed on the HUD panel, at the wrong places.
- Steam release: things at the top and bottom of the view could vanish in the headset: the Steam release's widescreen patch (fo2_zoom.dll) made the game cull the eyes' pictures as if they were 16:9.
- Steam release: the mod's test tools (background mode, input recording and replay) work there too.
Updating from 1.3: replace scripts\FO2VR.asi; nothing else changed. From 1.2 or earlier, see the notes of 1.3 (the game restarts once at the first start, to use 4 GB of memory).
Contains the mod (scripts\), Ultimate ASI Loader 9.7.4 (winmm.dll) and DXVK 3.1 (d3d9.dll, 32-bit), with their licenses (the same as in 1.3).
FlatOut 2 VR 1.3
New
- No more silent waits for the VR runtime: when SteamVR (or Virtual Desktop, or another runtime) takes more than a few seconds to start, a window says what the game is waiting for and closes by itself once the runtime is ready. When the runtime fails, the window says why and what to do, with Try again, Play without VR and Quit. Before, the game just stood still with nothing on the screen.
- 4 GB of memory for the game: FlatOut2.exe, as released, may use only 2 GB of memory, which it shares with the VR runtime and the graphics driver. With VR, some larger tracks ran out of it and the game stood still at the loading screen (seen with SteamVR on a Valve Index). Now the mod sets the "large address aware" flag in FlatOut2.exe when the game starts (the original is kept as
FlatOut2.exe.2GB.bak) and starts the game once more with 4 GB. A window appears only when the file cannot be changed, e.g. when the game's folder is not writable.LargeAddressAware=0inscripts\FO2VR.inileaves FlatOut2.exe as it is.
Good to know
- The first start after updating restarts the game once: that is the mod setting the flag. Launched from Steam, Steam may then show the game as closed, and its overlay may be missing for that session.
- If Steam (Verify integrity) or GOG Galaxy restores FlatOut2.exe, the mod sets the flag again at the next start.
- If SteamVR hangs while it starts (its window never shows the headset), close it and start it from Steam: when Virtual Desktop's Streamer runs as administrator, the SteamVR it starts may not come up. See Troubleshooting in the README.
Updating from 1.2: replacing scripts\FO2VR.asi is enough (the new setting is on without a line in your FO2VR.ini). Extracting the whole zip also replaces scripts\FO2VR.ini, and with it your settings.
Contains the mod (scripts\), Ultimate ASI Loader 9.7.4 (winmm.dll) and DXVK 3.1 (d3d9.dll, 32-bit), with their licenses (the same as in 1.2).
FlatOut 2 VR 1.2
New
- A cockpit: the game's camera inside the car puts you in the driver's seat, with the driver's hands on the steering wheel, the dashboard, the roof, the pillars and the windows around you (the game itself shows none of it there). The first race with the mod starts in the cockpit; C switches the camera as before, and the game keeps your choice.
Cockpit=0gives the game's own view back. - The HUD on the dashboard: in the cockpit the gauges, position, lap, map and the rival's name stand on one band curved round your eyes, laid out the same in every car (a layout of its own for a derby's HUD). The panel keeps the messages, the countdown and the pause menu.
CockpitHud=0puts it all on the panel. - Side mirrors that show what is behind, convex as real ones are, with depth for each eye, until a crash knocks them off. Each mirror in view costs some 0.6-1 ms;
Mirrors=1takes half that,Mirrors=0turns them off. - The windows: their reflections, the sun's glints and their tint, light enough to see through (
CockpitGlass). - Thrown out through the windscreen, you fly on in the driver's head until the car is reset (
EjectView). - Derby: the triangles that show the rivals' damage hang over their cars in the world, on every side, instead of on the HUD panel.
- Move the view against the car with the numeric keypad while held (8 2 4 6 up, down, left, right, + - forward, back; 5 puts it back), e.g. to sit a little lower in the cockpit. It is kept for the next game. Num Lock must be on.
- Recording a video:
Mirror=2shows a steady view on the monitor, cut from the left eye. It follows your head smoothly, with the horizon level, and the HUD shows where it hangs in the headset.
Fixed
- Far-off turn signs no longer show their board through the arrow in crawling bands: the eyes keep depth as 32-bit floats (
FloatDepth). - The drivers' hands turn the wheel smoothly instead of in steps.
- The sun's lens flare no longer shines through the car's roof.
- F9's choice is kept for the next game.
Updating from 1.1: replacing scripts\FO2VR.asi is enough: the new settings take their defaults (the cockpit, the mirrors) without lines in your FO2VR.ini. To see and change them, copy them from the new scripts\FO2VR.ini; extracting the whole zip replaces yours, and with it your settings.
Contains the mod (scripts\), Ultimate ASI Loader 9.7.4 (winmm.dll) and DXVK 3.1 (d3d9.dll, 32-bit), with their licenses (the same as in 1.1).
FlatOut 2 VR 1.1
New
- Hide the HUD while racing: press F9 to take the HUD panel out of the headset while the race runs, and again to bring it back. It still shows for the countdown, the pause menu and the results; the monitor shows the HUD as before. To start with it hidden, set
Hud=2inscripts\FO2VR.ini.
Fixed
- The game's settings dialog (
FlatOut2.exe setup, the launchers' Settings) opens at once: the mod no longer starts VR (and SteamVR) for it.
Updating from 1.0: replacing scripts\FO2VR.asi is enough (F9 works with your current FO2VR.ini). Extracting the whole zip also replaces scripts\FO2VR.ini, and with it your settings.
Contains the mod (scripts\), Ultimate ASI Loader 9.7.4 (winmm.dll) and DXVK 3.1 (d3d9.dll, 32-bit), with their licenses (the same as in 1.0).
FlatOut 2 VR 1.0
First release of the VR mod for FlatOut 2.
Contains the mod (scripts\), Ultimate ASI Loader 9.7.4 (winmm.dll) and DXVK 3.1 (d3d9.dll, 32-bit), with their licenses.
Tested on a Quest 3 (Virtual Desktop and SteamVR) with an NVIDIA GPU.
