Storage locations

Storage locations are the places you keep food: cupboards, fridge, freezer, cellar. Administrators maintain them under Storage locations.

Five are created on the very first start — kitchen cupboard, fridge, freezer, pantry shelf, drinks cellar. They are ordinary data: rename them to match your home. The seed only ever runs while the table is empty, so a renamed location never comes back under its old name.

What you can do

• Create a location.
• Rename one. The new name applies everywhere at once, including older journal entries — it is still the same physical place.
• Reorder with the ▲▼ arrows. This order is used for the tiles on the Stock page and in every picker.
• Retire and activate — see below.

Each row shows how much is stored there, so you can see at a glance what is empty.

Retiring instead of deleting

There is no delete. Stock entries and journal lines point at locations; deleting one would take its history with it. Instead a location is retired:

• it disappears from every picker and from the Stock page,
• its history stays readable, and
• the journal filter still offers it, so old bookings remain findable.

For everyday use a retired location behaves exactly like a deleted one. It can be activated again at any time and returns to the position it had.

Two rules when retiring

The location must be empty. Otherwise its stock would vanish from every picker while still counting towards your totals — the app would be lying to you. Move or book out the contents first; the message tells you how much is left.

The last active location cannot be retired. Without one, nothing could be booked in at all.

Retiring also clears that location as the default on any items that used it. Those items fall back to the first active location for quick corrections until you set a new default. The confirmation message says how many items were affected.

Why locations are never translated

Location names are your data, not part of the interface. "Küchenschrank" stays "Küchenschrank" whichever language you pick — the same rule that applies to item names, tags and recipes. A fresh installation seeds English names because English is the default language.
