Kits and Configuration

What gets saved where

What Where Contains
Project state Inside your DAW project/preset, automatically All 439 parameters, slot names, sample references, UI scale, "Editor follows focus"
Kit file (.dgkit) Anywhere you like; the kit folder by default The 16 slots (source, name, slot parameters, sample file name), no effects
Samples of a kit In a folder named like the kit, next to the .dgkit file The audio files used by the kit, see Samples
Pad mapping %APPDATA%\Dubgefahren\settings.json, per user Note of pad 1 and grid origin (MIDI menu), see MIDI and Host Integration

Because kits don't contain effect settings, loading a kit swaps your slots but keeps your current delay, phaser, reverb and filter setup.

Kit menu, import, export

  • Kit ▾ → Load Factory Kit: load the built-in Factory Kit.
  • Kit ▾ → New Empty Kit: all 16 slots empty (pick a sound source for each pad).
  • Kit ▾ → name: every .dgkit file in the kit folder is listed; click to load.
  • Import: pick a .dgkit file anywhere on disk.
  • Export: save the current 16 slots as a .dgkit file (default: the kit folder). Exporting to a new kit copies the samples it uses next to the new file.

Invalid or foreign files are rejected with an error message; your current slots stay untouched.

Kit folder

Default: Documents\Dubgefahren\Kits (created automatically).

To use another folder, edit the config file inside the installed plugin:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\Dubgefahren.vst3\Contents\Resources\Dubgefahren.config.json

{ "kitFolder": "D:\\Music\\Dubgefahren\\Kits" }
  • Open your editor as administrator: the file lives under Program Files.
  • Backslashes must be doubled in JSON.
  • Environment variables are expanded, e.g. "%USERPROFILE%\\Music\\Dubgefahren" on Windows or "%HOME%/Music/Dubgefahren" on macOS.
  • On macOS the file is ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/Dubgefahren.vst3/Contents/Resources/Dubgefahren.config.json; the default folder is ~/Documents/Dubgefahren/Kits.
  • The file is read once when the plugin loads; restart your DAW (or reload the plugin) after editing.
  • If the file is missing, empty or invalid, or the folder doesn't exist, the default folder is used. For an invalid config the plugin shows a notice when you open the kit menu, import or export.
  • build.ps1 install never overwrites an existing config.

The .dgkit format

Plain JSON, easy to diff or generate. The current format version is 6; versions 1 to 5 still load (missing stretch keys default to off, 100 % and 20 ms, a missing colour to green).

{
  "format": "dubgefahren-kit",

    // … exactly 16 slots
  ]
}
  • source is synth, sample or empty. A sample slot also has sample: the file name inside the kit's sample folder (no path, no ..).
  • Choice parameters are stored as indices (e.g. wave: 0 sine, 1 triangle, 2 saw, 3 square; trigMode: 0 gate, 1 latch, 2 one-shot; choke: 0 none, 1–4; stretch: 0 off, 1 all, 2 loop).
  • Missing keys fall back to defaults, unknown keys are ignored, out-of-range values are clamped.
  • Files from a newer format version, with ≠ 16 slots, or larger than 1 MB are rejected.
  • Names are UTF-8 (umlauts are fine), max. 32 characters.
  • colour is the pad colour: 0 green, 1 turquoise, 2 blue, 3 violet, 4 pink, 5 red, 6 orange, 7 yellow. Missing, non-numeric or out-of-range values load as green; empty slots are always green.
