Sailing drills

  1. Sets of 6 tacks/gybes (x4 times)
    • Coordinate weight balance (roll tacks)
    • Sheet tension
  2. Figure 8s
    • Marks 2 boat lengths apart
    • 2 figure 8 in each direction
  3. Boat balance: keep boat on course
    • Tie tiller or go rudderless
    • If boat falls off -> trim sail or heel to leeward
    • If boat heads up -> ease main & flatten boat
  4. Timed starts
    • Set 1 minute timer
    • Practice vanderbilt starts
    • E.g.: 26 secs down, tack 8 secs, 26 secs back
  5. Spinnaker sets/take downs (x4)
  6. Windward mark roundings (x4 each)
    • Port/starboard approach
    • Same as above, followed by a gybe
  7. Leeward mark roundings (x4 each)
    • Keep boat flat
    • Stay wide on approach, close as you round up
    • Judge wind direction b4 rounding to determine course after rounding
  8. Spinners (x2)
    • 4 times in each direction
