Compatibility
Applies to Frames Map 3D 1.0.10 for Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge).
| Loader | Supported |
|---|---|
| NeoForge 21.1.249+ | Yes |
| Fabric | No. The original was a Fabric mod; this port is NeoForge only. |
| Forge | No. |
The mod works on both sides, and it is optional on the client. The network channel is registered as optional, so a peer without the mod can still connect.
| Setup | Result |
|---|---|
| Mod on client and server | Full 3D maps. |
| Mod on server only | Clients without the mod join normally and see the flat vanilla map. Right-clicking a frame still rotates it as vanilla does, because the mod does not swallow the interaction. |
| Mod on client only | Joins normally and receives no 3D data; maps stay flat. |
A dedicated server is supported. A crash on dedicated servers in version 1.0.0, caused by the client-side packet handlers being class-verified on the server, was fixed in 1.0.1.
| Mod | Status |
|---|---|
| Iris | Supported. Detected directly, and the 3D geometry is skipped during Iris's shadow pass so it is not darkened twice. |
| OptiFine, Sodium, Embeddium, Oculus, Rubidium, Continuity, Zoomify, Indium, Starlight | No compatibility code and no explicit support. The mod does not detect them. Whether it works alongside them is untested. |
The 3D geometry is drawn with Minecraft's own render types rather than a custom shader, which is why it is compatible with shader packs by construction. If a mod that changes how items or maps are rendered causes problems, the workaround is to turn 3D Map Rendering off in Configuration, which stops the rendering without losing the captured data.
The server captures the 3D volume of each map, at 128 by 128 columns over the world's full height, from the chunks that are already loaded. The capture is budgeted to roughly 4 ms per server tick and at most 8 maps are queued at a time, so it does not noticeably affect tick time. Captured volumes are stored in the overworld's data folder, and an already captured map is refreshed about once a minute.
The server only hands 3D data to a player who holds that map, or who has a frame with that map within 128 blocks. This is the same behaviour as a vanilla map's own information.
The per-map options are kept in the map item's custom data, which the game syncs normally. They are deliberately not stored in the entity data of the item frame, because entity data is broadcast to every client tracking the frame, and clients without the mod crashed on it. Storing the options on the item means clients without the mod safely ignore them.
