Configuration

Applies to Frames Map 3D 1.0.10 for Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge).

The config file

Everything on this page is stored in a plain properties file in your game directory:

<game-dir>/config/maps3d-client.properties

Despite the name, this is not a NeoForge TOML config, and it is a client-side file. There is no server-side configuration: the server never reads it and the map data it produces is the same for everyone.

The file is written only when you change a setting for the first time, so a fresh install does not have it. It is saved atomically, so an interrupted write cannot corrupt it. A missing or unreadable value falls back to its default, and an unrecognised level-of-detail value is reported in the log and ignored.

You can edit the file by hand while the game is closed, or use the in-game screen, which is safer and validates as you go.

In-game screen

Options → the map-icon button just above Video Settings (it has no text label, only a tooltip) → 3D Maps Settings.

The button is injected into the options screen right before the Video Settings row, so it sits above the video settings, not inside them.

Options

Option Type Default What it does
renderingEnabled boolean true Master switch for drawing the 3D geometry. When false, every framed map falls back to the vanilla 2D texture. Map data is still captured, synchronised and cached in the background, so re-enabling it is immediate.
lodAggressiveness enum NORMAL How aggressively 3D detail is dropped as the frame gets further from the camera. See below.

LOD Quality

The six levels trade visual quality for performance. The mod drops detail in two steps as the frame gets further away: first the volume is halved, then reduced to a third, and past a certain distance only the surface is drawn.

Option Config value Full detail within Reduced detail Surface only beyond
Best Quality LOWEST 20 blocks up to 26 26 blocks
High Quality LOW 15 blocks up to 21 21 blocks
Balanced (Default) NORMAL 10 blocks up to 16 16 blocks
Better Performance HIGH 5 blocks up to 11 11 blocks
Best Performance HIGHEST never up to 6 6 blocks
Absolute Best Performance MAXIMUM never up to 4 4 blocks

The distance is measured from your camera to the item frame, so the same framed map can be drawn at different detail levels at the same time if you have several in view.

Values are read case-insensitively, so lowest, Lowest and LOWEST are all accepted. Anything else is ignored with a warning in the log and the default is used.

The per-map "start from Y" clip interacts with this: raising the clip reduces how much geometry has to be drawn in the first place. See Map Settings.
