Map Settings

Applies to Frames Map 3D 1.0.10 for Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge).

Per-map, not global

These options belong to one map inside one frame, not to your client. They are saved on the map item itself, which has two consequences worth knowing:

  • Two frames holding copies of the same map share these settings. Changing one changes the other.
  • A map that was framed before version 1.0.8 is reset to the defaults (3D on, start from Y 48) the next time it loads, because those maps predate the settings.

The global switches — turning 3D rendering off entirely, and the level of detail — live in Configuration.

Opening the screen

  • Right-click the framed map. On a map the mod can configure, this opens the settings screen instead of the vanilla rotate action.
  • Or use the keybind, which is the way to open the screen without right-clicking at all. See below.

The server only allows this within 6 blocks of the frame, and spectators cannot open or change it. The settings screen does not pause a single-player game, and it closes by itself if the frame is broken or the map is taken out while it is open.

A frame is not configurable, and right-click keeps rotating it as vanilla does, when the frame is a fixed one (backed with a glass pane), when it holds no map, or when it holds something that is not a map.

Options

Option Default Range What it does
Map Mode 3D 3D or 2D Switches this map between the 3D geometry and the vanilla 2D texture.
Start from Y 48 -64 to 256 Only terrain at or above this height is drawn, so the deep layers of the map are hidden.
Rotate — — Button, not a setting: turns the frame 90 degrees.

Start from Y is the useful one for large or noisy maps. Surface terrain sits well above sea level, so raising the value to around 64 shows only the landscape and hides stone, granite and caves. The full range goes from the bottom of the world (-64) to the top (256).

The value is validated on the client before sending and again on the server, so it cannot go out of range even if the map item was edited by hand.

The keybind

Keybind Default What it does
Open framed map settings unassigned While looking at a configurable item frame holding a map, opens that frame's settings screen.

It is deliberately unassigned by default so it cannot collide with an existing key. Bind it in Options → Controls → Frames Map 3D.

The keybind needs a server connection, because the screen is opened by the server, and it only works on a configurable framed map like the right-click path.
