Getting Started

Applies to Frames Map 3D 1.0.10 for Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge).

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.21.1
  • NeoForge 21.1.249 or newer
  • Java 21

No other mods are required.

Installation

  1. Download the JAR.
  2. Put it in your mods folder, together with NeoForge.
  3. Launch the game.

Seeing a map in 3D

  1. Craft a map and hold it in your hand. Let the server explore the area around you, then use the map to fill it in. A map only gains 3D data for terrain that is already loaded and explored.
  2. Place the item frame on a wall.
  3. Put the filled map into the frame. The map is captured as a 3D volume and drawn inside the frame.

While a map's 3D data is still being captured, the flat 2D map is drawn as usual. The 3D view appears once the capture finishes.

A map only captures terrain in the same dimension where it was created, and only while the map is held in your main hand or off hand. Maps that are locked by a cartography table are not captured.

Opening the settings

There are two separate settings screens, and they are easy to mix up.

  • Global client options — one switch for 3D rendering and the level of detail, the same for every map. Reached from the map-icon button in Options (just above Video Settings), or with the keybind described in Map Settings. See Configuration.
  • Per-map options — the 2D/3D mode, the "start from Y" clip and the rotate button, stored on one specific map inside its frame. Reached by right-clicking the framed map. See Map Settings.

Right-clicking a framed map normally rotates it, vanilla style. When the map is one the mod can configure, right-click opens the settings screen instead, and rotating moves to the Rotate button inside it.

Adjusting performance

3D map rendering is the expensive part. If the frame rate suffers:

  1. Lower LOD Quality in the global settings. See Configuration.
  2. Raise Start from Y on the maps you do not need in full detail: the deep layers are then not drawn. See Map Settings.
  3. As a last resort, turn 3D Map Rendering off globally. The maps go back to the vanilla 2D texture, and the mod stops rendering but keeps capturing and caching data in the background, so turning it back on is instant.
