The GetIt tab 🌍

In one line: browse and download software written for the Spectrum Next, straight from zxnext.uk.

GetIt is the catalogue of modern Spectrum Next releases — games, demos and utilities built for the machine rather than ported from the 48K era. If you want something that shows off what the Next can do, start here.

The other online tabs cover different ground: ZXDB is the historical ZX Spectrum archive, zxArt is the demoscene and artwork collection, and Unite! searches all three at once.

The GetIt tab

The Gallery view in 🎮 Retro mode. Every tile carries a source tag and a ♡ to save it to your Favorites.

First visit: a legal disclaimer appears. ZX-Next-Unite hosts nothing — it queries each service's public API and downloads from the URLs those APIs return. Making sure your use of a file is legal where you live is up to you. Tick "I agree and understand. Do not show this message again" to stop the dialog reappearing.

Quick start

  1. Open the tab. It shows the latest 20 releases without you typing anything.
  2. Type a title in the search box and press Search, or click Random for something you weren't looking for.
  3. Click a result. A screenshot and its details appear on the right.
  4. Choose where it goes:
    • ⬇ Download — saves it to the downloads/ folder next to the app.
    • 💾 Send to SD card — downloads it and copies it into the disk image currently open in the SD Card Utility tab.
    • 🔁 Send via NextSync — downloads it and starts the NextSync server pointed at that folder, ready for you to run .sync5 on the Next.

Double-click any result to open it full-screen with big screenshots, all its metadata, and the same action buttons.

The search bar

Control What it does
Search box Type a title and press Enter or Search. Leave it empty to get the latest 20. Autocomplete suggests titles as you type (switch off in Settings).
Latest The most recently published releases.
Random Jumps to a random page of the full catalogue. Good for discovery.

View: Table (columns + preview panel) or Gallery (grid of picture tiles).
🎮 Retro Renders the results as an 8-bit pygame visualisation. Decoration only; needs pygame-ce.

The status label at the end of the row reports what is happening — searching, downloading, done. After a download it becomes clickable: click it to open the folder the file landed in.

Table view

Four columns: ID, Title, Author and Size. Selecting a row loads its preview on the right, above the three action buttons.

Gallery view

A grid of tiles, each with its cover or loading screen. Tiles animate on hover by default — you can change that to timed or off in Settings, along with the grid size (2, 4 or 8 per row), image size and rows per page.

Each tile has a ♡ heart in the corner. Click it to save that item to the Favorites tab.

Right-click on any result

Action
Download "<title>" Save to downloads/
Send to SD card (image) → … Copy into the loaded disk image. Greyed out when no image is open. The menu shows the exact destination path.
Send using NextSync → … Download, then start the NextSync server on that folder

Troubleshooting

No results at all. The tab needs internet access. If your connection works elsewhere, a firewall is probably blocking outbound calls from python.exe or the app executable.

"Send to SD card" is greyed out. No disk image is loaded — open one in the SD Card Utility tab first.

A tile shows a placeholder instead of a screenshot. That entry has no image in the catalogue; nothing is broken.
