Pack Rat v2026.10.10.2 — Details focus fix
Fixes
- Opening a container's details (or the coin purse) on a PC no longer puts the cursor in its search box, where the search suggestions covered what's in it.
- "1 other copy … comes from the same custom item" (was "come").
Everything else is as in v2026.10.10.

Pack Rat v2026.10.10 — Templates, the catalog and containers
What's new
Templates
- Groups are now templates. Templates nest: one under another is a kind of it. The top ones are the filters and colours (D&D 5e: Weapon, Armor, Gear & Tools, Consumables, Container, Magic Item, Treasure & Trinkets, Document); the ones under them are sub-filters in shades of their colour, and their categories one level more (Gear & Tools ▸ Tools ▸ Artisan's Tools).
- Your templates work like the system's (you can also edit and delete yours): put one under any template, give it a colour of its own or a shade of its parent's. A deleted template that items still use stays, faded, until none do.
Items and the catalog
- Inventory items follow their catalog item. Change a custom item in the catalog and every copy changes. Edit on an inventory item saves it as a custom item in the catalog (if other copies share it, you choose: change them all, or a new version for this one). What's written on paper, a copy's name, notes and count stay its own. Items you edited before keep their changes as custom items.
- Coins are Treasure ▸ Coin items in the catalog.
Containers
- The coin purse is a container: tap your coins and its details list them as items, with Gain, Spend and Consolidate, and where the rest of your coins are.
- A container's details show what's in it in the inventory's own list (search, rows or tiles, each thing's menu). It can show its contents only there, like a deck.
- Compartments have a container's options (what they hold, counted, weightless, sealed…) and either share the container's capacity (with a limit of their own if you like) or have their own. Gear strapped outside is a compartment with a capacity of its own; compartments fold like containers.
Also
- The Character panel's Abilities boxes fit the side column on wide screens.
- Adventuring Gear's "Common" category is now "Standard"; the template under Consumables is "Potion or Supply".

Pack Rat v2026.10.09 — Containers, coins, slots and the parts library
What's new
Items
- Coins are items. The ones in your purse are the Coins panel; others can go in containers (the coin purse lists them, puts them in and takes them out). Shops, trades and treasure work as before.
- One Container. It holds things, a liquid, its own pieces (a deck) or a pack's contents. Holds: Only… limits it with rules (certain items, a group, a template, words in the name), counted if you like: a quiver of 20 arrows, a piggy bank of coins kept apart from your Coins.
- Actions in your own words. A container's actions: take one at random, take one you choose, take everything out, put things in, then switch a state on or off. "Shake one out", "Smash it" (then Broken). A deck's Draw a card is one of these.
- Sealed containers hide what's in them from players. Compartments: a side pocket, a lid.
- Equipment slots (D&D 5e: two hands, armor): a full slot asks what to take off. Two-handed for versatile weapons: more damage, both hands.
- The campaign's own states (Settings → Campaigns → Item states): Broken, Lit, Wet… beside the game system's. Templates say how many items use them.
Party
- Show… an item to other players or the GM. Discard sends it to the GM's Treasure (Discarded). Items remember where they came from.
Icon editor
- A Library: Parts (kits: sword, axe, potion, shield, bag, bow, staff; tap parts and they fit together), Symbols (dice, suits, marks, elements), your own drawings, and Text (three fonts; words can show values: "{qty} arrows").

Pack Rat v2026.10.08.2 — Boards, layers and players
What's new for GMs: boards and players
- Board layers: a board can have layers of pins and pictures (a fog, a second map, a drawing that moves with Global values). Each starts shown or hidden, locked or not; expand the board and use Layers to change them on your device. Locked pins can't be dragged by accident.
- Pins as pictures: a pin can be a drawing or an icon instead of a dot, at a size, with the point that sits on the spot (centred, or the foot of a flag or figure), a nudge, and a small dot on the exact spot.
- Groups of pins: a group (say, the party) moves everyone in it at once, each player's own values following. Tap it to Split off one who wanders away, and Rejoin them, or drop them back on the group.
- Players dropdowns: a dropdown can list the party's players. Pictures show the Local values of whoever is chosen, and sliders, switches, buttons and text set them: one panel for every player.
- Pictures with Local values: a Picture control can show a player's or an item's Local values, not only the Global ones.
- Full-colour drawings: turn the plate or outline off for a list (its View menu), choose its size (Settings → This device), and the item's details show the drawing without it.
- A new install's map has the party as a tent and the goal as a chest, the goal's layer locked.

Pack Rat v2026.10.08 — Icon editor: popups, colours, view bar
What's new in the icon editor
- Formulas on a phone: the Variables tab opens full height, in pages (Values, Bindings, Try it, Interact), with a keypad. Tap in values (the drawing's, the time's, the item's), functions, numbers and symbols, without the phone's keyboard. On a computer, use Open larger.
- Adding a shape opens a preview and a short guide to the tool tabs. Set its size, its look (outline, rounded, glow, shadow) and a first animation (spin, pulse, blink) before it goes in. Tick Skip this next time to skip it.
- Drawings in their own colours: the colour button in the editor's top bar switches between one colour and the drawing's own colours. In lists, the item's type colour sits behind a full-colour drawing (Settings → This device → Full-colour drawings: Plate or Outline).
- The view bar: along the bottom of the canvas, a touchpad button to move the view, with fit, 1:1, centre on the selection and the zoom.
- A phone turned sideways: the tools stand beside the canvas.
- Groups: dragging a layer into or out of a group no longer moves it.

Pack Rat v2026.10.07 — Wide screens and a first character
What's new
- Wide screens: on a screen wider than 1300 px, Pack Rat uses the room. The inventory's panels sit beside the list, and an item's details open in a panel on the right instead of a window: pick another item and they swap, ⤢ opens them as a window. The catalog's groups run down the side, and GM panels sit side by side. Settings → This device → Wide screens switches back to one column.
- A first character worth opening: a new install's Adventurer starts with things to try: a backpack whose picture fills as it's loaded, rations and arrows whose pictures count them, a compass and a totem that follow the GM's map, a pocket watch, and a deck of cards. Six new starter drawings come with them.
- The GM keeps the Inventory tab, even with no character in play.
- GM controls: the Kind list is grouped (Layout, Display, Interactive).
- The icon editor:
- The info bar is now a How it works button.
- Functions come in Math, Logic and Animation lists, and clicking one puts it into your formula.
- The selected shape gets a thin outline.
- On a phone, the tools fold away while you work on the canvas.

Pack Rat v2026.10.05 — Drawings on GM panels
What's new: drawings on GM panels
- The Icon control is now Picture, and it can show one of your drawings (Choose…, or Draw… right there), not just a built-in icon. A drawing that reads Global values moves with them: a wind vane that turns as you set the wind.
- Buttons and tabs can have drawings for their pictures too.
- Editing a drawing in Catalog → Drawings updates the panel pictures that use it, as it does items.
Panels made before keep working as they were.

Pack Rat v2026.10.04 — Icon editor tools
What's new: the icon editor, easier and more exact
- Select by tapping a layer on the canvas (tap again for the one under it), and move it with the ✥ handle straight away, no press and hold.
- Lines up with other shapes' edges and middles as you move it, with guide lines. Hold Ctrl (⌘) while dragging for a slow, exact drag; values show beside the pointer.
- On phones: a view pad moves and zooms the view (a finger on the canvas no longer knocks it), a nudge pad moves the layer by 1 or 10 with a Fine switch for drags, and a magnifier shows what's under your finger.
- Preferences (the gear): handle size and opacity, the move handle, what touching the canvas does, snapping and the turning step, and every shortcut. Pack Rat keeps them on this device.
- The point an animation turns about can be typed, put anywhere in pixels, or attached to another layer (a clock hand on its pin, following it if it moves).
- Try it: scrub a value a layer's animation reads to see it move, with a motion trail of where it goes, without changing anything.
- The padlock locks the view; F zooms to the selection.

Pack Rat v2026.10.03.8 — Interactive items
What's new
- Interactive items. A drawn icon can now be used: tap, drag, swipe, turn or hold parts of it. In the icon editor, select a layer and, under Interact in the Variables tab, choose a gesture and what it does: set or add to a value, mark the time, roll a random number, play a sound, vibrate, or do something with the item itself (switch a state, use one, add one, use charges, draw a card, show its details). Preview lets you try it in the editor.
- Use it in an item's details: switch to the picture in the header, or press and hold the item and choose Use. Values named
local_…are the item's own: they're kept, synced in a party, read by its rules, and go with it when it's traded. - Starters in Catalog → Drawings: an abacus, an hourglass, a lantern, a drum, a die and a card deck, ready to give to an item or change.
- Sounds on This device: On, Quiet or Off.
Everyone in a party should update: older versions draw the hidden touch areas of interactive drawings.

Pack Rat v2026.10.03.7 — Image view, icon editor list, new README
What's new
- Just the icon, done properly: in an item's details, the image switch puts the icon or picture at the top of the window, as big as fits (a tall picture fills the height, keeping its shape). It stays in that view if the item changes while it's open, and refits when the window is resized.
- Icon editor: the Variables tab's Pack Rat item list explains Global and Local values but no longer lists every one made elsewhere (the GM tab → Values has them); a drawing's preview still uses the real values.
- A new README that sums Pack Rat up quickly; the how-tos, and a new Developing Pack Rat page, are in the user guide.
