Sail plan

Canonical foretriangle and main dimensions:

P = 39.6 ft   (mainsail luff; 39'7" measured)
E = 13.75 ft  (mainsail foot)
I = 48 ft     (foretriangle height)
J = 20.5 ft   (foretriangle base)

These are the foundation for sail purchase, replacement furler sizing, and any polar work. See also Sails.

Standing rigging

  • Aluminum spars, keel-stepped mast
  • Hi-Lock fittings throughout (installed 2019)
  • Bobstay + whisker stays inspected by Mike @ DYC March 2026 — good for another 2+ years. Next inspection due ~2028.
  • Main shrouds: Hi-Lock fittings (matches the 2019 refit). Wire diameter ❓

2019 mast unstep / refit

The mast came down for a full going-over in 2019:

  • New standing rigging with Hi-Lock fittings
  • New sheaves
  • New halyards
  • New mast wiring
  • New LED nav + spreader lights
  • New B&G wind transducer with NMEA 2000 cable
  • Mast and step corrosion removed; both coated with POR-15

Inner forestay (staysail)

  • Stay length, top of mid block/sheave to top of swage: 32' 8"
  • Vertical drop from that block straight down to the mast: 30'
  • Cable: 5/16" wire (8 mm), 1x19
  • Lower terminal: Sta-Lok long stud + 1x19 wedge socket (replacing original swage)
  • Turnbuckle: original Hayn — the long stud threads directly into it, no change
  • Original swage dimensions (for reference): 13.55mm at cable, 16.65mm at base — logged 2026-05-11

Winches + Spars

  • 2 × Lewmar 43, self-tailing, double-speed → primary jib sheet winches (cockpit aft)
  • 2 × Lewmar 40, single-speed, no self-tailer → staysail sheet winches (cockpit forward); the "ridge on top" is a fairlead groove, not a tailer
  • Sequence on each side: Lewmar 40 → cleat → Lewmar 43
  • Whisker pole aboard

Running rigging

Line Color Diameter Length Status
Jib sheets solid red/green 1/2" 64' new (2026)
Staysail sheets white with red/green tracers 3/8" (10mm) ~45' ea (rough) beat. need to be replaced.
Main halyard/sheet white with red tracer 1/2" ? pretty solid
Downhaul pink 1/4" ? very beat. Must be replaced soon!
Jib furling line needs replacement
Staysail running rigging plan: copy current rig with new lines, but much shorter (currently at least 2× too long)

Sheet routing

  • Jib sheets: existing jib track blocks → aft to Lewmar 43s.
  • Staysail sheets: lead inboard of the jib sheets, up over cabin top turning blocks (pending install — see open items), then aft to Lewmar 40s. The jib tracks are too tight to the cabin to be reused for the staysail.

Reef line (single-line jiffy reefing on the main)

  • Routing: clutch → along boom → through cheek block (turning point) → up to leech cringle → stopper knot.
  • Cheek block leads the line forward to the cockpit.

Jib characteristics (yankee)

Defiant's jib is a high-cut yankee. This shapes sail handling:

  • Slips through the slot easily; can be tacked together with the staysail.
  • Singlehanded standard: furl jib → tack on staysail alone → unfurl jib on new tack.

Furlers

  • Jib: existing Harken (model ❓). Very creaky — may end up replaced with a Reefurl (Rogin) alongside the staysail furler.
  • Staysail: brand new furler from Rogin @ Reefurl — Rogin re-engaged late April 2026, active.

Hardware

  • Mack Pack installed (2026-03). Compatible with the new loose-footed mainsail — bag attaches to the boom and catches the sail regardless of foot attachment.
  • Cheek blocks: pending — go up mast to mount.

Open items

  • Service pedestal cables
  • Run-back clutches and rollers (main + reef)
  • Replace davit cord with steel cable
  • Install cabin-top turning blocks for staysail sheets
