UI Conventions  web-lines  Launch!

Launch! has been designed to be a point-and-click affair, but also support full keyboard navigation and efficiency.

Icons

The following icons are used across Launch! They're up here front row because if you understand the limitations of VGA/EGA font cells and 9th-pixel cell extension you'll appreciate how I managed to achieve pretty good results with incredible constraints.

Using the keyboard

Global shortcuts

  • Ctrl+Q or Alt+F4 - Close program
  • Esc - Dismiss the current popup/dialog/view; does not close program
  • F11 - Toggle full-screen/maximize where supported
  • Alt+Tab - Cycle through tabs where present

Menu management

  • Ctrl+A - Add a folder or launcher to the open menu
  • Ctrl+D - Delete the selected item after confirmation
  • Ctrl+E - Edit the selected folder or launcher
  • Ctrl+Up/Down - Move the selected item within its menu
  • Ctrl+S - Sort the open menu alphabetically

Menu navigation

  • Up/Down - Select an entry
  • Right - Open a selected folder
  • Left - Close the current folder
  • Enter - Open a folder or send a launcher command to the prompt
  • Esc - Close the complete menu
  • \ - Quick Launch mode, quickly search your menu and run

Common shortcuts (where the function exists)

  • Ctrl+O - Open
  • Ctrl+E - Edit
  • Ctrl+N - Create new
  • Ctrl+S - Save
  • Ctrl+D - Delete
  • Ctrl+P - Print
  • Ctrl+Del - Clear
  • Ctrl+Ins - Show character map
  • Ctrl+X - Cut
  • Ctrl+C - Copy
  • Ctrl+V - Paste
  • Ctrl+G - Go-To
  • F5 - Reload/Retry

Using the mouse

Have you ever seen a mouse cursor at the DOS prompt? Now you can!
If a suitable mouse driver has been loaded (MOUSE.COM, MOUSE.SYS, CTMOUSE.EXE, etc.) you will be able to use a mouse with Launch!

Cursor - Pointer Cursor - Block Cursor - Arrow

The cursor (pointer style by default) will be visible when Launch! is run.

Mouse usage

  • Left click outside all visible menu panels or an accessory/game closes the program.
  • Left click activates items
  • Right click an item opens its Edit dialog/properties
  • Double clicking opens a list item

Where supported

  • Holding the mouse button down will draw/construct
  • Holding down CTRL+ as well will pan
  • Holding the right mouse button down will erase
