Installation

You can install Device Backup & Restore directly on your e-reader using Storefront or by manually copying the plugin files.

Method 1: Install via Storefront (Recommended)

If you already have Storefront on your device, installing and updating takes just a tap:

  1. Open KOReader → Tools → Storefront.
  2. Tap the Plugins tab.
  3. Find Device Backup & Restore (or search for backup).
  4. Tap Install.
  5. Restart KOReader when prompted.

Tip: Installing via Storefront allows you to receive update notifications and update the plugin directly from your e-reader with one tap.

Method 2: Manual Installation

If you prefer installing manually from a computer:

  1. Download the latest release archive (backup.koplugin.zip) from the Releases page.
  2. Unzip the file and copy the backup.koplugin folder directly into your device's KOReader plugins directory:
    • Kobo: /mnt/onboard/.koreader/plugins/backup.koplugin
    • Kindle: /mnt/us/koreader/plugins/backup.koplugin
    • Android: /sdcard/koreader/plugins/backup.koplugin
    • Desktop / Linux: ~/.config/koreader/plugins/backup.koplugin
  3. Safely disconnect your e-reader from your computer and restart KOReader.
  4. Access the plugin anytime from the Tools (wrench icon) menu → Device Backup & Restore.

Requirements

  1. KOReader: Version 2024.12 or newer (or a recent nightly release). All necessary compression and network tools are already built into KOReader.
  2. Storage Space: A few megabytes of free space for typical backups (settings, plugins, fonts, and reading history).
  3. WiFi Connection (Optional): Only required if you want to use the Beam to Device feature to send or receive backups wirelessly between e-readers, or if installing via Storefront. Offline backups and restores require no internet connection at all.

Where to Find the Plugin in KOReader

Once installed, Device Backup & Restore is easily accessible from both the File Manager and the Reader view:

  • Tap the top menu bar to open the menu.
  • Tap the Tools icon (represented by a wrench / screwdriver).
  • Tap Device Backup & Restore to open the main menu.
