Cloud Storage

Device Backup & Restore lets you connect your preferred cloud storage provider to automatically upload your backup archives and manage them directly on your e-reader.

No computer or cables needed—everything syncs over your local WiFi.

Supported Cloud Providers

The plugin supports a wide range of personal cloud drives and self-hosted protocols:

  • Google Drive: Official OAuth 2.0 device flow.
  • Microsoft OneDrive: Official Microsoft Graph OAuth connection.
  • Dropbox: Simple web bridge authorization.
  • WebDAV: Compatible with Nextcloud, ownCloud, Fastmail, Synology, and custom WebDAV servers.
  • FTP / FTPS: Standard file transfer protocol with SSL/TLS encryption.
  • SFTP: Secure shell file transfer over SSH.

Connecting a Cloud Account

Connecting your cloud account takes less than a minute:

  1. Connect your e-reader to WiFi.
  2. Open KOReader and tap Tools → Device Backup & Restore → Backup & Restore Settings.
  3. Tap Cloud Storage Settings.
  4. Tap Storage Provider and pick your service (for example, Google Drive or WebDAV).
  5. Tap Connect [Provider]...:
    • For Google Drive & OneDrive: Your screen displays a verification website address and an 8-character user code. Open the link on your phone or computer, sign in to your account, and enter the code.
    • For Dropbox: Tap the connection button to receive a short link or scan a QR code to authorize.
    • For WebDAV, FTP, or SFTP: Enter your server address, port, username, and password using the on-screen keyboard.
  6. Once connected, tap Test Cloud Connection to verify that everything is communicating properly.

Organizing with Nested Remote Folders

You can store backups in any custom directory structure on your cloud drive:

  • Subfolder Support: Instead of keeping all backups in a single root folder, you can organize them by device or profile (for example, backups/koreader/kindle or My Drive/Reading/KOReader).
  • Automatic Folder Creation: If any folder in the path does not exist yet on your cloud account, the plugin automatically creates the entire folder tree for you.
  • Smart Path Cleaning: The plugin automatically handles both forward slashes (/) and backslashes (\), and strips away any accidental leading, trailing, or duplicate slashes.

To customize your remote backup folder:

  1. Go to Backup & Restore Settings → Cloud Storage Settings.
  2. Tap Remote Backup Folder.
  3. Type your preferred path (such as KOReader/Backups) and tap Save.

Automatic Cloud Uploads

Once configured, you can set the plugin to upload backups automatically:

  • Upload on Creation: When enabled in Cloud Storage Settings, every manual backup you create will automatically upload to your cloud folder whenever WiFi is active.
  • Upload on Scheduled Backup: If you use Scheduled Backup Reminders, you can turn on Upload to Cloud on Completion to sync your regular backups without any extra steps.

Browsing & Managing Cloud Backups

You can manage your cloud archives right from KOReader:

  1. Tap Backup & Restore Settings → Cloud Storage Settings → Browse Cloud Backups.
  2. View a list of all backup archives stored in your remote directory.
  3. Tap any backup to view details, download it directly to your e-reader for restore, or delete it from remote storage to free up space.

Privacy & Security

  • Direct Storage: Archives are uploaded directly to your own personal cloud accounts or self-hosted servers.
  • No Third-Party Access: The plugin authors never have access to your accounts, files, or encryption tokens.
  • Local Credentials: Authentication tokens and server credentials are stored locally on your device in KOReader's configuration files.
