Fan Control

Understanding how Ramses Extras controls your FAN device, and zone-dampers if you have any installed.

Overview

Ramses Extras uses a fan-speed arbiter to manage all fan control commands. This ensures that multiple features (Humidity Control, CO2 Control, manual button presses) work together smoothly without conflicting with each other.

Control Sources

Your fan can be controlled from several sources:

Source Priority Description
Manual Override Highest When you press a fan speed button on the HVAC Fan Card
CO2 Control High When CO2 levels exceed thresholds
Humidity Control Medium When humidity conditions trigger ventilation
Unit Auto Lowest The FAN's built-in automatic mode

Control Modes

The system shows you exactly how your fan is being controlled:

  • Manual – You've pressed a speed button (low/medium/high), and automation is temporarily suspended
  • Extras Auto – Ramses Extras automation is active (Humidity or CO2 Control)
  • Unit Auto – The FAN is using its own built-in automatic mode

How to See Your Current Mode

The HVAC Fan Card displays the control mode in two places:

  1. Control Mode Badge – Shows Manual, Extras Auto, or Unit Auto
  2. Auto Toggle – A visible toggle switch that shows whether extras automation is enabled or disabled

Manual Override

When you press a fan speed button (Low, Medium, High), the system enters sticky manual mode:

  • The fan immediately changes to your selected speed
  • Humidity and CO2 automations are temporarily suspended for that device
  • The manual setting persists until you explicitly exit manual mode

How to Exit Manual Mode

Press the Auto button on the HVAC Fan Card. This returns control to the arbiter, which will:

  • Resume automation if Humidity Control or CO2 Control have active demands
  • Or return to the FAN's built-in auto mode if no automation is triggered.

You can toggle between Extras Auto and Unit Auto modes using the Auto button again.

How Multiple Features Work Together

Example Scenario

  1. Humidity Control detects high humidity and requests fan_high

  2. The arbiter sets the fan to high speed

  3. You press the Low button on the card (entering manual mode)

  4. The fan drops to low speed, and Humidity Control is temporarily suspended

  5. CO2 Control detects high CO2 and requests fan_high

  6. Manual mode is still active, so the fan stays at low speed

  7. You press Auto to enable Extras Auto mode

  8. Now CO2 Control takes priority (higher than Humidity Control), and the fan goes to high

  9. You press Auto again to enable Unit Auto mode

  10. The fan returns to its built-in auto mode, bypassing Extras automation

Priority Order

When multiple features request different speeds:

  1. CO2 Control wins over Humidity Control – CO2 safety takes precedence
  2. Manual wins over everything – Your direct control always takes priority
  3. Highest speed wins – If two automations are active, the higher speed is used

Transport Monitoring

The system monitors whether your FAN device is responding:

  • Online – Device is responding to commands
  • Offline – Device hasn't responded recently (commands may be queued)

The HVac Fan Card will show an indicator (red or green pill) to show the transport state.

You can see this status via the binary_sensor.transport_state_{device_id} entity.

Diagnostic Entities

Each FAN device has diagnostic entities to help you understand control state:

Entity Purpose
sensor.fan_control_mode_{device_id} Shows current control mode (manual/auto/pending)
binary_sensor.transport_state_{device_id} Whether the device is online/offline

Troubleshooting

"My button press didn't work"

Check:

  • Is the device showing as online in the transport state sensor?
  • Did automation immediately override your manual setting? (Check the control mode badge)
  • Is the HVAC Fan Card showing any error messages?

"Automation keeps overriding my manual setting"

This shouldn't happen in sticky manual mode. If it does:

  • Check that you're running a recent version of Ramses Extras
  • Verify the control mode shows Manual after pressing a speed button
  • Check Home Assistant logs for errors

"Control mode doesn't match what I expect"

  • If showing Extras Auto but fan is low: No automation is currently demanding higher speed
  • If showing Unit Auto: The FAN's own logic is controlling speed
  • If showing Manual with no speed button pressed: You may have an old manual override active; press Auto to clear
