Fake Loot (visual loot tables)

Fake loot exists to display drops that the game hardcodes and that therefore have no loot table of their own — the Nether Star from the Wither, mob equipment drops, and similar cases.

How it works

A fake loot table is never used by the game to generate items. It is read by ALI and merged into the loot information shown in the viewer:

  • if the block or entity already has a loot table, the fake entries are merged into it,
  • if it has no loot table, the fake table is used to build the loot info from scratch.

Because it is a datapack file, it is reloaded with /reload like any other datapack content.

Location

Place the JSON in your datapack (or mod's data folder) at:

data/<namespace>/fake_loot/<path>.json

<namespace>:<path> is the ID of the loot table the fake one belongs to — the table the block or entity uses, or would use if it had one. By vanilla convention that is <namespace>:blocks/<block> for a block and <namespace>:entities/<entity> for an entity, so the namespace is the block's or entity's own namespace, not your datapack's.

Example — Wither dropping a Nether Star

data/minecraft/fake_loot/entities/wither.json:

{
  "pools": [
    {
      "rolls": 1.0,
      "bonus_rolls": 0.0,
      "entries": [
        {
          "type": "minecraft:item",
          "name": "minecraft:nether_star"
        }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

Example — extra drop for a modded block

data/examplemod/fake_loot/blocks/machine.json describes what the block examplemod:machine (loot table examplemod:blocks/machine) should additionally show:

{
  "pools": [
    {
      "rolls": 1.0,
      "entries": [
        {
          "type": "minecraft:item",
          "name": "examplemod:machine_core",
          "conditions": [
            {
              "condition": "minecraft:random_chance",
              "chance": 0.5
            }
          ]
        }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

From 26.3 loot tables are written in a different form — a single condition object with a type instead of the conditions list, and a modifier instead of the functions list — so there the same file reads:

{
  "pools": [
    {
      "rolls": 1,
      "entries": [
        {
          "type": "minecraft:item",
          "name": "examplemod:machine_core",
          "condition": {
            "type": "minecraft:random_chance",
            "chance": 0.5
          }
        }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

The file format is an ordinary loot table in the format of your Minecraft version, so conditions, functions and number providers all work and are rendered exactly like the real thing.

Notes

  • All vanilla hardcoded drops are already shipped with the mod; you only need this for your own content or for a mod that does not ship its own.
  • Fake loot is display-only. It changes nothing in the game — if the entries do not match what the game really does, the viewer will simply be wrong.
  • A block that only drops itself is normally hidden (hideDefaultBlockLoot, see Configuration); adding fake loot to it makes it show up again.
